Don't get your hopes up. They're pretty much exactly the same except 16:9 safe and a bit slimmer - meaning more space for extra data. The only major difference is the departure away from Gill Sans on the straps which I'm sure many of you will be delighted about. (This is only on the astons though, titles and the core brand logo are staying will Gill.)

Gill Sans (depending on the version you use) does not look good in all weights, so these "quirks" will show up more in the HD resolutions, so something would have to be done.
Either way, I hope that these changes become standardised by all programmes/channels at the same time. It will be annoying to have these HD graphic changes be implemented in pieces.
Also (and this goes for HD and SD) Anything above Gill Sans Display Bold should NEVER EVER be used. Extra and Ultra bold are ugly!
Let's hope. I've always thought the one thing that lets down the 2008 look was the lower thirds. They were far inferior to the 2007 graphics.
And the biggest improvement would be abandoning Gill Sans. Brilliant font for logos, but Swiss is much better for just general text.
Yes there are going to be new lower thirds for HD across all of BBC News, starting with World HD in September.

If World News are going to get a new graphics package/refresh in September, wouldn't the news channel need to follow suit. I only say this because overnights, with both the News channel and World sharing output from the World News studio/gallery itelf - which will be in BH - the graphics (especially the lower third astons) are going to be different sizes, than the News channel, if it sticks with its current 2008 graphics set until it moves. It's going to look awful mess on screen, especially with the ticker, dog and clock being a different size and layout on screen with the new astons.

Unless World give NC a clean feed and they put their own graphics on using the (then) old N8 VIZ kit.

Truer words have never been spoken.
Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see a return to Swiss - but I wonder if they might opt for Gotham, variants of which are in use in the BBC Sport graphics set. I know that there's never been much correlation between the BBC News and BBC Sport design language, but this could be an interesting opportunity to introduce some commonality between the two, especially since BBC Sport branding gets more prominence on BBC News these days.
Bit of a mess during the NC simulcast of Breakfast this morning (AFAIK this generally didn't affect regions with possible exception of London?) that started in the middle of the local opt just before 7am: a frozen picture with no sound for the rest of the opt, but then instead of going back to Breakfast at 0700, 2 minutes of BBC World News was shown...
Hopefully this font will be consistent with the website, I think its Helvetica, almost identical to Swiss. This will also bring it back into line with the Weather presentation.

I tried a few ideas, they look pretty silly but they took me a while because I tried really hard to try come up with something fresh. I took the fonts and BBC Sport in mind but it just turned out looking ex BBC Arabic-ish and similar to a mock I worked on a few years ago... but here they are. Not sure with what one I want to continue on though.
