Big fail by BBC News Channel. Failed to cover by-election result live. They presumed there would be no sensational result, and were caught napping.

Whilst I would agree that there was a lack of coverage, I would guess that this was because it's basically BBC World simulcast in the UK, it wouldn't be very interesting for Newsdays target audience in Asia etc.
I'm also assuming that's why it was covered briefly during World's ad breaks.

Although I don't know why the UK couldn't opt out of showing Asia Business Report & Sport today and thus being able to do 30 minutes of analysis etc.

Because Kasia Madera needs time to brew her super-strength coffee... its Galloway so nobody really cares... and as Andy Parsons says "Dear News 24... Go to bed."

I see what you mean, I just wondered whether it would have been possible, but as you say It's Galloway and I can't see many people been that interested in it.

Whilst it may only be Galloway as others have said, the bye election result does matter if you have the misfortune to live in Bradford and/or follow the machinations of politics. I would contend that any election where a rock solid seat is lost to a minority party with a majority of 10,000 is news. With this item leading the News Channel and Breakfast during the Friday morning I would cite as being evidence of the importance of this story.

There's only one gallery overnight - and ABR and Sport Today are broadcast from that gallery. It's true that with some foresight and planning they could've arranged for staff to cover N6 and do a By-election Special - but that wouldn't be something that could've been done at short notice.

As well as gallery staff you would probably want a separate presenter rather than Babita doing it while ABR was on - she's had to sustain a couple of times when Rico has fallen off air when the line went down.

Sod's law says that if she was doing something UK specific for half an hour there would be problems in Singapore

I didn't know about the technical side of things but I can see why it couldn't be done with Kasia anyway because of the issue with the line to Singapore being tempremental lately.

These photos have been posted by Joshtoday in the Broadcasting House thread but thought they might be good to have in this thread too. Just to clarify, not my pictures, credit goes to Joshtoday for bringing us these great pics.

World/Newsnight/Andrew Marr/possibly Sunday Politics?

Think all of them are superb - my favourite is definitely the NC/Bulletin ones though. Looks bang up to date and the return to the newsroom for all bulletins is great.

I do like the new renders.

BUT, is BBC News Channel getting new graphics?

Let's hope. I've always thought the one thing that lets down the 2008 look was the lower thirds. They were far inferior to the 2007 graphics.

And the biggest improvement would be abandoning Gill Sans. Brilliant font for logos, but Swiss is much better for just general text.

Yes there are going to be new lower thirds for HD across all of BBC News, starting with World HD in September.

Don't get your hopes up. They're pretty much exactly the same except 16:9 safe and a bit slimmer - meaning more space for extra data. The only major difference is the departure away from Gill Sans on the straps which I'm sure many of you will be delighted about. (This is only on the astons though, titles and the core brand logo are staying will Gill.)
