I'm glad they touched on the subject of poor reception for News 2. . 4 . . sorry BBC News Channel on Sky Digital. I have noticed i'm getting signal glitching on BBC News & BBC Parliament. How dare that bloke sit there and say it's our fault and we should pay to get someone to put it right when it's they who have changed it for the worse. It worked how it was, why break it and then tell us to sort it Twisted Evil . Out of interest is anyone else having reception problems? We obviously need to start a campaign to get them to sort this, saying it's our problem is way out of order!

The transponder that the BBC News Channel has moved to has been causing difficulties for some models of Sky Digibox for some months now. It's rather glib of the BBC to say it's a dish alignment problem. It appears on closer examination not to be a signal strength related problem, but rather a characteristic of the chip set used in some boxes.

Thanks for that. I didn't think it was an alignment problem given the box says the signal strength is very high (and you would expect it to affect multiple channels rather than just two). Do you know if there is anything i can do to resolve this problem? They mention re-tuning the set top box but i didn't think you can retune a Sky box?!

EDIT: Just found this on the BBC Reception advice page:

Why am I currently having problems with some BBC services on satellite?
(23 April 2008) We have been made aware that a small number of viewers are experiencing problems receiving BBC News on digital satellite. Having made thorough checks, we are confident that there is not a problem with the transmission itself but that the problem lies with individual satellite receiving installations. Viewers who have problems receiving BBC News, or any BBC service on satellite, are advised to contact a reputable satellite or aerial installer for further assistance.

Not very helpful is it.

No you can't, you could try rebooting it, by swiching off at the mains for 30 seconds, and back on.

Also be aware that the signal strength and quality bars you see in the set up menu is only measuring the 'Default' aka EPG transponder. You need to look at the received signal for the one carrying BBC News.

You need to enter the hidden 'Installer's Menu'.

Press:-
Services > 4 >0 > 1 Select. (You won't see anything change on the screen until you hit 'Select'.

Then select 'Manual Tuning' and enter these parameters:-

Freq 11954
Polz H
Symbol Rate 27.5
FEC 2/3

Then hit 'Find Channels'

What will appear then is a display for the BBC News transponder.

Signal Strength is not relevant, but Signal Quality should be at least 50%. If it is, then there's nothing wrong with your reception (For that transponder)

No, typical BBC Gung-Ho stuff. As I say, the problem is not signal strength related, it seems to be box design related. Which box have you got ?

What a mess. The floor between the barco screens and the small desk used for Sportsday has a mass of wires running along, would have been less obvious if it was covered up as they seem to between the barco screens and the main desk.

Signal Strength is about 60% for Input's 1 & 2 and signal quality is 60% for input 1 and only about 20% for input 2! (take it thats not good). Digibox is a Sky+ Amstrad model: A2P0524 version: 4F2104 and the operating system is 1.31B03 is this helps?

Though equally - if it is a faulty chipset or chipset/firmware combo - what is the BBC supposed to do about it? If the fault is with the receiver that isn't the BBC's fault. If the uplink and transponder are both functioning within spec what else should they do? Empty the transponder and pay for space segments they can't use?

If they are aware of it - the best they could do is advise people of the issue with their receiver model I guess.

A rather confused Ben Brown on BBC News wondering which studio camera to look at.

Am I right in thinking there are fewer staff on BBC News at the weekend? There seem to be less variety in camera shots, e.g. when the sport has finished they have cut to another camera rather than a wide shot showing both presenter and sports presenter.

AIUI there is no vision mixer at weekends - with the director vision mixing instead (as used to be the case all the time on News 24). However for much of the day I believe there is still a lighting/camera remote operator - which is still more than News 24 had.

I guess no one wants to assume responsability with a situation like this (too many people & companies involved). Only thing that annoys me is the fact the BBC moved to another transponder when the one they were on worked fine. I'm sure there is probably politics i dont know about here but why couldn't they just leave it where it was?! Why should i have to pay to put someone else's fault right.

More examples of the confusing brand change with Chris - 'You are watching the news channel, er, BBC News channel . . . . . Also coming up on BBC News 20 - channel'

Bet the bigwigs are regretting it now!

I hope someone has a red face. News 24 worked as it was, they have ruined it for me!

They should be, there was no need to rename the channel or move studio.

Stop being so negative. Of course there was a reason for moving studio.

I agree with the studio move - looks better, and I'm sure that once they are used to it, presenters will start to use the space better.

Just the name change bugs me !!
