Or not.

I think it may be a little early for the BBC to launch their Olympic countdown clock. Here's hoping it doesn't become a permenant fixture for a significant amount of time.

They launched the clock immediately after the end of Beijing. I'm sure there was a cap on here showing the ridiculous length of time.

Roger Johnson just joined by Owen Thomas on the NC - apparently a 'BBC News Special' about the current situation with the French and Libya. Looks like a simulcast on World.

Yes, going out on World as well.

Big exposure for Roger Johnson - broadcasting around the world, a man who usually only presents sports news on BBC South Today! He's not a bad presenter though, seems to be coping with the breaking news coming in quite well.

Nevertheless, think it was a good idea to bring Owen to the desk as well. He has far more international experience from an anchoring perspective.

Indeed, and rather bizarrely, the BBC News Channel also had to be interrupted for that coverage, so we had to watch the newsflash on the NC too (presumably due to gallery issues of controlling two concurrent outputs).

Even more bizarrely, when we returned to rolling coverage on NC, we crossed to a statement from President Obama, which couldn't be heard because for some reason, he was drowned out by a Portuguese translation audio feed. When we returned to the presenters, no acknowledgement of this issue was made.

We didn't see that Obama segment on World. I think we may have continued with yet another interview with Kevin Connolly in Libya. Obama hasn't appeared on World at all for the last few hours, IIRC.

Totally agree. Will certainly be interesting to see how this coverage pans out over this evening and how long this simulcast will last. Luckily the national bulletin today isn't until 19:10 today, so no worries about having World seeing this unless it lasts longer than that point.

Surely it would be possible (if necessary) for the 19:10 bulletin for it to come from the BBC World studio and use their gallery and leave the N6 gallery available for the BBC One news bulletin. Newsflashes in their nature are largely very last minute items where as the 19:10 bulletin is planned.

A dreadful mess at 1655 when, after having asked a question of the current interviewee - former British Ambassador to Libya, Sir Richard Dalton - about 15 seconds into his reply, Roger Johnson suddenly had to talk over him and cut him off quite rudely in order to 'say goodbye to viewers on BBC World News', which was all the more ridiculous when, having disposed of WN viewers, NC viewers were left watching Roger and Owen for another five minutes, and wondering why we couldn't have returned to Sir Richard Dalton to continue the interview.

Another strange quirk at 1700 was Roger's pre-headline intro - "these are the headlines on BBC News at 1700 GMT"... I don't think I've ever heard a time-check like that before; if it's on the News Channel, it's usually "the headlines at whatever o'clock", if it's a simulcast or World News alone, I don't usually hear any time checks, except on some specific programmes (e.g. "it's X o'clock in London, Y o'clock in New York, and Z o'clock in Tripoli where something newsworthy has happened"). I assume the simulcast is continuing?
