Whilst you can get scrollers and other similar motorised gel lamps (in fact at least one BBC News studio uses scrollers for lighting the header boards above the Barco walls)

There was a video of the newsnight studio powering up at about the time Channel 5 claimed they were getting rid of noddys and the boards cycled through several colours before they reached newsnight's purple. I presume this is the scroller?

Colour Scroller - fits on the front of most types of generic light - many different sizes are available.

You can see several scrollers in this photo of TC7, especially around the far side hung light box thing.

Wow. What an interesting foto!! Is ALL of that lighting used for the news, or for other studio (non-news) purposes?

That is the studio that Breakfast, Newsnight, News at Six, Andrew Marr etc come from so presumably a mixture

It's hard to believe that is has already been three years since the 2008 BBC News relaunch. Seems like yesterday!

The 2008 relaunch brought an end to the "let's refresh the brand every year" thing they had going on, which IMO felt like it was just for sh*ts and giggles.

It's hard to believe because hardly anything, at all, has changed. It has, honest to God, been the worst era of BBC News branding in modern times. Everything still just looks so dull and stiff, the ticker, the backdrop, the astons etc. Three years and not one single standing TOTH on the News Channel? The only changes over the last three years have been the red light at the top of the studio being on permanently during NC broadcasts, the tint of blue to the backdrop and the countdown music/visuals being modified last year. I understand the BBC wants to try and save money where it can, but compare to Sky News and their innovativeness ie. actually redesigning something every now and again, and there's no competition really.

That's true, however we've seen a refresh of Newsnight, a brand new desk for The BBC News At Six (and therefore also Newswatch), brand new studios for most of the BBC Regional News programmes, not to mention a new look for BBC Wales Today, and a complete refresh for Newyddion, despite sharing the studio with Wales Today.

More surprising to me is how fresh the Channel 4 package still feels despite being over 6 years old.

And yet is still Britain's most popular rolling news channel. By far.

Three years and not one single standing TOTH on the News Channel? The only changes over the last three years have been the red light at the top of the studio being on permanently during NC broadcasts, the tint of blue to the backdrop and the countdown music/visuals being modified last year. Why will standing at the TOTH improve the channel? Why do you think they should be redesigning everything all the time? How is it going to improve anything?

What BBC News needed, and is achieving, was a reintegration of it's myriad of outlets, and a period of stability of those changes, especially after the years before where things were being changed constantly, and different design teams were working on every different outlet. Since the 2008 changes, the BBC News brand is stronger than ever before.

ETA: At least the abandoment of constant updates have reduced the number of awful BBC News mocks on here! Laughing

I actually think the opposite to thursdayisa. I think it's been the best era for BBC News since the 1999 branding was dropped in 2003. The current brand is simple and unfussy and is incredibly unifying for the BBC's various outlets. Personally, I'm not bored with it at all and I hope they don't decide to 'sex it up' any time soon. That was a major problem for BBC News in the 2003-2008 period; they wouldn't leave it alone for more than 5 minutes. Totally unwarranted tweaking and I for one am glad they've made a decision and stuck with it for once.

Which brings it back to how much will change when they move to W1 next year (if things go to plan!). Complete revamp in keeping with moving to such a spectacular new home or evolution or no change. Place your bets now...!

Only thing I'd tweak are the astons, can't believe they haven't been touched since launch day. They do the job I guess but they're so lifeless and dull, blocking too much of the screen. Extensive work isn't required, just a few minor details here and there.

The title sequences and idents still look remarkably fresh and don't need refreshing/updating.

The rest of the brand has/is continuing to be implemented and managed superbly and is proving to be the most coherent look since the ivory era of 1999, a high benchmark.

I would consider getting rid of Gill Sans on the astons, never liked the look, although preferred if they went back to the pre-2008 font (as well as astons)

I'm sure there will be some form of revamp to go to Broadcasting House but I'd like to see an evolution. Perhaps some new titles based around the same theme of pulsating rings and place names. I suppose a similar evolution from 1999 to 2008 would have been if we hadn't had the black and red era.

I doubt they will but I hope they don't get rid of the David Lowe theme. I think it's now integral to the BBC News brand and anything else wouldn't have the same impact. I'd perhaps like to see him experiment with his sounds a bit more but keeping the drums and pips.
