Surprising that they were doing the coverage from N6, wonder why they didn't anchor from an OB in Oldham or even the NorthWest Tonight studio so they could get guests more easily as so many politicians were in Oldham anyway?

Because it would be considerably cheaper? Compare the one camera they had for Laura Kuenssberg to how many were in N6. It was also being seen as a more national event than other bi-elections, given the opportunity to test the coalition.

They did some kind of rehearsals a couple of years ago and it was all discussed from this page onwards: http://www.tvforum.co.uk/thenewsroom/bbc-news-channel-presentation-27695/page-165
So may the same kind this time or just maintenance.

There's a training exercise underway across News at the moment which I'd imagine is occupying N6. Dateline is in N8, whilst this is going out World are on a playout.

Dateline came from the BBC World desk, and Karin Giannone decamped to the pod for the preceding bulletin, which may have been recorded?
Dateline is good on the World set - very interesting use of camera angles and close-ups.
