59 second countdown into the ten there, and I'm firmly convince that the music up to 45 seconds sounds different to the usual countdown. I think there are some additional effects.

Definitely. So let me get this straight - there are 2 different audio versions of the new countdown, with the only differences between the two being before 45 seconds. Why???

There is a 90s version and a 60s version.
This one is the 90s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNITN30-oMs you can tell because the music is already somewhat built up before it hits 59s.

This one is the 60s one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt_6UKg0wnI

I hope they will be available on David Lowe's site soon...

Makes sense. I can't wait to hear the 90 second version in full, I think its fantastic. I wonder if there's a numberless filler version too...

There is. Saw about 10 seconds before the 10:35 news last night. It just sounds like the normal countdown without a lot of the effects such as the strings (just like the 2008 one was).

It's just incredibly dull. Let's face it, there's nothing new in it. It's just a remix, it doesn't sound at all fresh.
I did like Lowe's music, but he needs to come up with a new concept now.

Not until he's asked to. He's the composer - the BBC are the client.

Indeed, there were as interview with David Lowe on Newswatch last year some time; he basically said that the BBC had asked just for back to basics remixes of the 2007 era hence why the current mixes sound rather dull in comparison. Lowe has shown through the mixes he has created for World News Today, World News America, The Hub, BBC Persia etc that the beeps era still has some legs when they are mixed in different ways. Despite 4 remixes, the current National theme is pretty much the same since 2004, which I image is why it is starting to appear stale with us. Lowe's mixes are iconic to BBC News now, I believe the beeps should be kept, but perhaps at the next relaunch the BBC will allow Lowe to get a bit more creative with the concept.

I think that's the way they should move when they move to Broadcasting House.

Thanks for the heads up. It just goes to show that there is still a lot of life left in David Lowe and his BBC News music.

Just as a matter of interest, keep an eye open for Ian Pannell's recorded report on today's Afghanistan Bombing. It looks to me as if it's been sent by broadband and parts of the frame have lagged from others. Looked really strange. If anyone with more technical experience can observe it carefully and confirm my thoughts or come up with an alternative reasoning for the peculiar video effects on the report I'd be most interested.

It's nice to hear the 90 second version is actually a proper version if you get me. In 2008, it just sounded like 30 seconds of music followed by the usual countdown for 60.
