Ok so i've tried to fix up what I think are a few problems with the countdown.

http://www.factorfiles.com/BBC/2008Countdown.flv

Basically I've changed the timing so as the pips are back to where they should be (going up the octave at 10:00 and stopping at 00:00).

I've also tinkerered with the music to fix up a few bits that I think fall a little flat (just after 30:00, and the end) adding in some stuff from the outgoing News 24 countdown. I've also created an end bed for the ident, after the pips stop, to lead into the TOTH.

I've also put the data stream back in at the end and made the ident come in with it - as best as i could. I was going to completely redo it, and change the size of the numbers too (because they're way too big) but I basically couldn't be bothered. Anyway you get the idea.

Sorry about the dodgy bit of footage at the start - I just needed a slightly longer countdown so as you could here my little bit of mixing around 30:00 Razz

Very nice indeed. I thought there was something wrong but not sure what it was

Just goes to show hoe much thought was put into these changes.

Still do not like the new look for News 24. It has completely lost its look and feel for a news channel. Where are all the people in the fake news room? are they all on their break? Rolling Eyes

This happens on my Philips TV as well, but the other way round - the red DOG is fine, but the white strap goes in at the top left.

Bring back full-length straps, I say! Have Lambie-Nairn ever designed a graphics package that doesn't have a gap bottom left?

Same here, the left hand edge of the white strap is very distorted. Also, when it appears, the DOG/ticker bar moves downwards by about half a centimetre. I didn't know whether this was part of the design (in order to fit more graphics in) or if it was a problem with the television. I assume given that I've not seen this mentioned elsewhere that it is the latter. It's very annoying, and I haven't seen it on any other programmes. I can only assume it's a result of all that white.

Joanna with a "BBC NEWS 20...erm...BBC NEWS".

Am I the only one getting the impression they don't seem to understand why it's changed either? I got that from Declan's reaction yesterday and Bill at 8.30 yesterday on Breakfast...

Followed closely by Matthew, who didn't flinch as he promoted the live stream on the website.

The TOTH really lacks life now, I almost fell asleep watching it earlier... With the old headline bed they finally had something that keeps you awake, and alerts you to the fact that BBC News is coming. I would have thought that's something they'd have wanted to keep. Why have they now reverted to a boring single rhythm?

Just take a look at this to see what I mean - the music really drives you through the headlines, and makes you sit up and listen. Ok they now have the thunderclaps, but they don't have the same effect for me.

I think they should have kept the headline beds from last year TOTH/headlines/coming up.They were much better than this boring one we have now-I dont know why they botherd changing it as the old ones wouldnt exactley look out of place now as the titles are the same basic music-they should bring them back.

David Lowe's brief was to take the music back to basics. I'm quite pleased with it, to be honest. I always felt the 2007 music was very OTT, particularly on News 24. The National music was OK.

So how many references to News 24 have there been on the BBC News C-h-a-n-n-e-l since yesterday? I think it's funny - sort of undermines the suits' decision!

I do agree with you in a way but If they were looking at taking it back to basics they should have brought back the 1999 N24 headline bed it has that famillier sound and is a lot more up-beat than the current one (its way to slow!) that would sound a lot better and fit well with the titles, speaking of titles I think the sound track that was in the 1999 titles (N24) would fit in better with the current opening titles insted of the tune they have gone for (2007) Wink

I have two Samsungs (one cheap, one expensive) and neither do that - apart from the cheap one bleeds red and green, and the expensive one has a black shadowing when there is high contrast text, and has poor geometry.

I'm sure Matthew just said "6 o'clock news"! Oh, the horror!

I'll disagree with you for once itsrobert, I think the old music added to the pace of the 24 hr channel, now its very boring, its almost a return to the bad old days of 1999

I'm very underwhelmed by these graphics. They're too simple, and they need a bit more going on in them.

Now that I've finally made it to the end of the thread, lol, I'll make a few comments.

I like the background they're using, I like the idea of it being blurred as to keep the focus on the presenters, and as not to make it look too rubbish I suppose if it was a high quality, sharpened image.

The desk is quite nice, though it is a bit dark, along with the floor.

I like how they've set it up so that they can still do presentations from the wall, and it does make the sport look better in my opinion. Though I'm not sure about the laptop on a stick, I think it would have been better creating a mini podium of some sort, or having a high table, and a tablet pc.

Name change - horrendous, not needed, and a terrible mistake.

Titles - love them, nice animations, especially like the one at the end of the countdown with the box slightly opaque and centre.

Music - lacking a bit of something from the previous, not too disimalar, but enough so. Part of me would have preferred a completely new take on the idea I think.

On Screen graphics - absolutely apauling.
I've always hated gill sans, especially when the BBC over used it for everything, though I couldn't say that I was a fan of it before then.

Now that News presentation has moved on it doesn't look right in a large headline font. It just does look very dated.

As for the astons, etc. hideous. Why are these on TV, admitedly it is a nice animation when they animate on, but it could much better, I think a white with black shadowing effect version of the last set of graphics would have looked better in my opinion, if you get what I mean.
