Why does everyone always assume that because a studio shuts for routine maintenance that there will be some kind of 'relaunch'!
Never said I was expecting a relaunch, just that there is no improvement as a result of the work.
If it was just routine preventative maintenance, fine.
There is an improvement - the screens are matched much better - and now auto correct to keep them matched.
I don't see any improvement but that's because I don't have the technical eye. The upgrades that they have done will probably benefit technical/operational staff rather than viewers maybe?
Its been spelled out pretty thoroughly exactly what they've done.
Perhaps to stem the tide of, "waste of time/what's the point", I should mention that to run any kind of projector day and night for, broadly speaking, three years is a pretty astonishing feat.
Lamps have to be replaced regularly after a set amount of hours, but the heat they constantly pump out slowly cooks the wiring and PCB and every other component. Ultimately, even with cooling systems and fans, they have a finite life. Lots of heat in a tight space with perishable elements inside. Stack them in a giant array and you increase that heat from every direction.
The changeover was not to solve misalignment problems, as Worzel seems to have convinced himself of - but was probably planned from day one because the kit won't last forever. The fact that Barco's models now are 3 years more advanced (and have probably had feedback from the BBC throughout) is a benefit - but not the point.
