I notice that duing the BBC News at One, they are using tight Camera Angles so the virtual Christmas Tree doesn't come into shot. Why not let it just show?

The BBC1 bulletins have never had a Christmas tree. It's fine for Breakfast and the News Channel, but it's not the done thing for a serious, high-profile news bulletin. Neither ITV nor Channel 4 will have Christmas trees on their bulletins.

Makes you wonder why they don't just switch the background to the standard non-Christmas version for times when they don't want to show it.

I don't understand how BBC One bulletins are any more serious than the News Channel? If the Christmas tree is appropriate for the News Channel, why not for BBC One bulletins?

Because the atmosphere on news channels tends to be slightly more relaxed than network bulletins. Am I dreaming or did News 24 remove its Christmas tree because of the Bhutto assassination in 2007? I can't quite remember now. Either way, network bulletins tend to be a bit more serious than news channels under normal circumstances (breaking news aside, of course). To be honest, I'm not that keen on news channels having Christmas trees in vision. I think it's fine on breakfast programmes, daytime shows and regional news where the atmosphere is usually predominantly relaxed; news channels, on the other hand, have to be quite serious sometimes and the Christmas tree is a bit cringe-worthy in those circumstances.

The night backdrop doesn't have a Christmas tree on it, I don't think.

I see no reason when, given Christmas idents were used tonight into the Six, a tree isn't present in the newsroom-style shots. And in all honesty I often find the Five O'Clock News to be more serious and detailed than the Six, yet the Five will have a tree in the background and the Six won't?!

I think they've given up trying to hide it on the News at One as I did see it pop up now and again today.

Does anybody know why coverage of the Iraq Inquiry is being shown on a 1 minute delay?

Surely there isn't much danger of any of the esteemed witnesses suddenly blurting out a string of four-letter words without warning? Shocked

For the record ...

The first cut was made today during the evidence of Sir Jeremy Greenstock, the former UK ambassador to the UN.

I think the tree used to get wheeled in and out, because it was only to be shown on domestic broadcasts, so joint stuff with World had to get rid of it. They may have taken it out during that period to make sure that live studio interviews were usable on World?

Breaking news coming from Copenhagen with press conference coming up. What way will the NC go? World simulcast?

Also, back to the studio now and strangely Anita and Clive doing the 2130-2200 slot which is usually single headed. Anita did not look happy about it earlier on-face like a slapped ar*e!

And we go with the ten, not good. The BBC are covering it but it all seems preprepared where as sky seems to be rolling.
