How juvenile!!!! Who is that lady who threw the punches? I don't recall the BBC newsroom being a place for that sort of banter.

I wouldn't get on the wrong side of Emilie; she didn't look amused at the second hit - though quite rightly. It was funny the first time, bit of a joke, but they were just about to enter the headlines. Not very appropriate.

I wonder what the gallery was saying to them through the ear pieces.

I'd imagine it was the gallery/director saying something that made Emily change her tone like she did. Does the Business presenter or Sports presenter have earpeices when at the desk or does a presenter relay any messages whilst a report is playing? I assume they do when at the wall unless the studio/floor manager passes on messages?

Anyone know why the News Channel has taken the 1 today, at a time when the G20 protests were in places getting a bit tense. At a time when Sky was showing live pictures, the news channel was showing a weather forecast and then the countdown sequence before the 1.

I know there would be no studio to use, but couldn't the News Channel have just done an outside broadcast for half an hour, or depending on what World's coverage was, simucast with them for half an hour

When something major happens like these protests, I would expect a news channel to be providing continous coverage. Viewers who want other news can watch the BBC1 bulletin.

While the first sign of violence (a police officer being hit by a pole) was playing out live on Sky News, BBC News had Ben Brown in the 1 headlines saying that it had been peaceful so far.

What is going on with the News Channel today? C-team presenters (Ellie Crisell/Julian Worricker) and (after about 2pm) a willingness to duck out of showing live protest pictures. They just did a boring personal finance chat

Currently showing an advert for their G20 coverage and the 3pm countdown sequence while protests continue and a helicopter has just ditched in the North Sea

EDIT - The helicopter ditch not even mentioned in the TOTH headlines

Julian Worricker is hardly C-team. Probably one of the best presenters on the channel!

As a supporter of the NC even I must admit that things are NOT running smoothly with the channel today.

Yea, I agree....Julian's better than some. And Ellie's improved a lot since she first appeared and while they have some of the main presenters out on location, there's nothing wrong with having other (possibly less experienced) in the studio.

The issue has to be attempting to go to incoming video from the demonstrations earlier in the day, and from 4.30pm the multilateral meet and greets from Buckingham Palace. I'd suggest putting a buffer into these background videos as they hit the channel edit so that we don't have 'pregnant expectations' as Emily Maitlis experienced at least three times on the Five. Having this would have enabled the programme to run without these pauses, the presenter would have known that they were coming on stream in a specific period of time enabling a smooth flow.

Big news this evening . . . numerous big stories in progress, with the palace arrivals/meetings, the protests in The City and the helicopter crash . . . but we still have time for E24. Rolling Eyes

Sky News on top today IMO . . . by far.
