Welcome back to 1999! (well that was my first impression). Let's just hope the stuffiness of BBC News (24) doesn't also return as a result of this clear non sense. The background already bores me (i.e. it looks so fake the whole program could be made up news!). Still i will give it time as we all know first impressions are not always 'The Whole Picture The Whole Time'

Which just confirms to me that, even though I like the pips, some of the news themes from the 80s and 90s were just more majestic and authoritative.
That's true. I loved the themes in the 1980s and particularly 1990s. Those 'Virtual Era' themes were just magnificent, as was the 1985 Nine theme. They made you sit up and take notice!

OK, so I’ve relaxed and gained a bit of perspective, but it still isn’t really that great.
First the good bits.
The countdown – I nice evolution, especially like the end.
Titles – I said earlier that I’ve gone off them. And I have. The visuals are excellent; it is very fast paced and technically superb but there is something wrong. Oh yeah, that ruddy red box.
And that is it. I hate the rest I’m afraid.
The graphics first of all.
They share more than a passing resemblance to the AlJaz set, which is a bad thing IMO, because AlJaz and News 24 are aimed at two completely different markets. AlJaz is supposed to set the news agenda. Bold, different, unique even, graphics are part and parcel of this. News 24 has a UK audience to appeal to. They should know this, and whilst maybe there are not great differences in taste there are several differences in style which should be reflected in graphics. Yes I’m talking about the view of the newsroom, the ticker, breaking news etc. They do very little of this on AlJaz, yet there was such fuss on here that News 24 should have all three of the above. Why have they not considered this in the style of their graphics, which frankly look, dull, uninspired and cheap.
BTW, a point earlier was made about CNN and their newsroom. CNNi is odd, they used to, but they don’t anymore, but then American news channels don’t really do that. CNN Newsroom does, but the view is somewhat obscured by a mammoth desk and a prominent eyelevel background. Wizzy, Sensationalist graphics don’t really fit the newsroom mould.
The studio
I personally believe that the renaming of the network was an easy, superficial way of putting it at the ‘centre’ of BBC News in order to protect it, if the money man should call. Therefore I find it obscene that they should put a channel supposedly in the thick of it, at the heart of a WORLD institution, in what looks to be a frosty box. Half-hearted. Make up your mind. It is either at the centre of News and you clearly portray that feel on screen, as the old set did, or it isn’t, and the rest of this rebrand is just shameless boardroom nobodies covering their behinds.

I wonder what the original brief was for this relaunch?
Whilst watching the BBC News-Channel I keep thinking that im watching a proper BBC1 News broadcast rather than a rolling news channel. (Is this the point of the new studio?)
The previous studio lent itself to a rolling news channel more where the new studio looks all nice and shiney but is very cold, uninteresting backdrop, looks dated, bland and has lost all the news-worthyness of the previous studio. It just looks as if nothing is really going whereas even the ITV News and Sky have some activity in their backdrops.
Even changing the name and dropping the 24 is a huge mistake - it really is a well known brand and shouldnt be played with! How is Entertainment 24 going to fit into the schedule now?
The opening titles to all the regional programmes are nicely made and about the best part of the relaunch - a very coherent look.
Whilst looking at all the regional videos it really is apparant how different all the BBC regional studio really are. Its nice to have some variations but ALL studio are vastly different with one of them even having blue walls (was it North West Tonight?)
The graphics are nice and simple but are they too simple?
Ill end this post with the same question I posed at the top - does anyone know the original brief for this relaunch? I wonder if it has really improved anything and delivered on any fronts?

When CNN moved into their new studios without the newsroom background I was so disappointed and mad. I still hope they will return to a newsroom set BUT their current sets grew on me and now I even like them. CNN sets are used very good, they have newswalls, plasma screens and several presenting points and they USE them often.
This new BBC set is only used at the desk and the sport presenter stands next to the wall and that's it.

Whatever about the "spartan" issues of N6 vs. N8 (as Cameron put it) I'd rather that nicely designed newsroom background with lifts going up and down and virtual shadow men creeping back and forth then some odd squares foobling about on a blue background all day.
