But that would mean a battle between BBC News channel and BBC World News for a key interview with the BBC Four edition of World News Today going out at the same time, perhaps it's time for BBC Four to get it's own news program and let BBC World News and BBC News channel similcast the full WNT hour.

Unlikely to happen. I believe that the BBC Four bulletin is VERY important to BBC World...

The changes I'd implement if the Five was dropped would be to switch E24 to 5.50pm. Mon to Thurs, could extend it a bit then, continue to run Mark K on Friday at the same time.

Then use the additional time at 6.30pm for an extended business bulletin.

That's one thing I find odd with the BBC News channel at the moment. There's only a dedicated business programme at 3.30 and 5.30am. It'd be nice to see World Business Report return for an evening run and I always thought the 10/15 minute editions on BBC World were pretty good - would certainly help the daytime lineup what with the credit crunch how it is.

I'm not BBC News's biggest fan but one thing that I think lets the channel down is now the news channel uses the same studio as network news, it has to take the network news, even when there is breaking news, or a press conference that network news would never show live. Before the studio sharing the new channel could just opt out the main news, or not take it at all. This isparticularly an issue with the one o'clock news

Also when the network news is not at the TOTH or at 30 minutes past it totally ruins the flow. Might sound silly but if you have a bulletin at say 9.50 and put the news channel on at 10pm you don't get the news headlines but the sport on the network news. Or like yesterday lunchtime with the network news at 2.05 the flow was totally broken. Instead of covering each story in turn, there was an interview on the main story, then the network news, then returning to cover the main stories in more depth. It seems very messy - just to save money on studio costs

They don't always have to take the Network News. During the News at 6, the News Channel can still opt out of it and they have done in the past. I remember them doing it for a vote in Congress. But if an International story breaks during a bulletin, the News Channel can join BBC World News.

Isn't News at 6 in the Breakfast studio? But I've seen before about one o'clock Sky News taking press conferences on domestic matters that BBC News would normally also show, but they haven't been able too

It was particularly an issue with the 1 a few times just before Christmas with a few court cases producing verdicts in the 12-1pm hour.

There were three verdicts on key cases on two separate days - Shannon Matthews one day and Rhys Jones / Glasgow Terror Trial on another day - within a few minutes of each other (which, btw, must have been frustrating for those who crafted long packages and a wealth of coverage for each expecting both to be the lead story on the day the verdicts came in!).

What was noticeable in both on the 1 was how willing the producers were to go to live pressers on the courtroom steps - in one case it meant the 1 went on until about 1.35pm. Not surprising I suppose given it's the news channel team producing the 1 now.

Shows what a difficult balance it is - but I wouldn't say it's an impossible situation and in the current era of budget cuts, I suspect the balancing act for 30 minutes a day (there's not often breaking news at 10) is very much worth it.

It looks like the News Channel are sharing with World News for some the live broadcast from Israel as the graphics are showing the local time (which I thought only World used).

I completely agree. I've been against the idea of using the same studio for the news channel and the nationals right from day one. It's also annoying on a Saturday morning when Breakfast is shown on the news channel all the way up to 10am, purely because it comes from N6 rather than TC7. Breakfast using the news channel studio at weekends has gone on for much longer and has always annoyed me.

When BBC News moves to it's new premises (eventually), will this studio sharing continue, as it's torrable in the short term, however bad it looks in practice at times?

They ought to have some sort of 'mini set' to take the slack anyway(they used to have something similar in N8 before the change), but the main thing is the technical issues.

Even a 'cut down' version of the main mixer would allow the NC to opt when needed easily, without having to faff about, worrying about BBC One.

One thing thats always puzzled me for both BBC News & ITV News Channel when it was on, was the insistence of using the top/main studio set for it's terrestial bulletins, & sod the 'rolling news' side!

As a viewer, I just want a news bulletin on BBC One, with no flashy sets!

It is MUCH easier to do this at 6 - when the BBC One bulletin comes from a different studio, than at 1 and 10 when it comes from the News Channel studio (as Working Lunch or Newsnight are in the other one)

It IS possible - but either as an opt in to BBC World or by doing some nasty routing of live sources directly to air and using the CSO studio used for 60 Seconds and daytime summaries etc.
