Surely the scheduling on either output can be arranged in such a way to allow for a single bulletin?

Of course it could have been. BBC 1 Scotland's schedule seems to have been organised so that they could squeeze in three minutes worth of extra Reporting Scotland - the rest of the country, IIRC, didn't have a late local news bulletin.

By filling from 9-11 with whatever they wanted, they could have then picked up the national bulletin and the lottery draw (which they missed out) from 11:00, and carried on as they did from 11:20. Alas, that would be too simple.

You're perhaps unaware of the history of Scots comedy programmes which fill the evening before the bells? Scotch n' Wry, Only an Excuse and something new this year - Comedy Resolutions started at 10.40.

I'd have been disappointed to have the comedy interrupted for late news. I think they made the right decision.

Precisely! We pay our licence fee too, so why should our Hogmanay schedules have to be arranged so as to fit with the rest of the UK? What might have made more sense is putting the news on BEFORE the UK's New Year Programme, rather than in the middle of it!

Sorry if my comments caused any offence - that was certainly not the intention - and indeed, the scheduling of the network news was silly. It just seems an unusual decision to do a Scotland-only bulletin (and I am aware that this has been done on a number of occasions before) when the schedule didn't necessarily require it.

I'm sure it could have been rearranged so that the news went out across the country at the same time, and without interrupting either New Year Live or one of Scotland's programmes.

(I'm aware that this is straying from the thread topic so feel free to contact me via PM should anyone wish to continue this.)

You certainly didn't cause offence. The English scheduling was curious.

with the lunch time news being at 2.05 this afternoon we had the ridiculous situation of the main story being read on the news channel once at 2.00 and then immediately repeated for bbc one viewers.

it did however mean they put on a brief countdown (minus the numbers) at 2.04.

no doubt its been used before and i'm just not watching news 24 enough. although it wasn't particularly bad, surely a world-style breakfiller would sit in the middle of a bulletin more easily, whilst waiting for bbc one to join.

Sorry, no offence caused. Sometimes the scheduling just makes little sense - like having the national news so late, so late in fact that it interrupted the New Year programme itself.

Five O'Clock News ......

Not really missed it over the Christmas Season, Huw is a good presenter but perhaps it's always been a bit over hyped (including by me).

Maybe time to drop from the schedules permanently?

I think it needs its own original format/graphical presentation to stand out and make its self heard. Its rather in the shadows of the schedule at the moment.

I think it's a real disappointment. Would be better moved to 18.30-19.30 in my opinion.

From 18.30-19.00 Huw could look in depth at some non-headline stories, then do a normal TOTH at 19.00 followed by a key interview with a headline guest until 19.30.

That way George could handover to Huw at the end of the Six with the promise of a big interview, and something that BBC One viewers might switch over to BBC News for if they're not interested in local news.

Or even have George and Huw co-anchor

Yeah that could work. Co-anchor from 1800-1830 with Huw doing the big interview exclusively on BBC News at 1830. He could then use it again at 22.30 instead of the wreck which is the 10 News Hour.
