Don't think there can be much argument that there's certainly the perception the bulletins aren't as polished as before.

That's for sure! All a bit messy...nearly 6 months on and they're still having problems with the end of simulcasts. They had these types of problems when the weekend bulletins were in N8 of course, but I do miss the days when all bulletins had a "proper" ending i.e. regional news wasn't linked to at the end of the nationals. Just something a bit amateur about BBC News now...presentation-wise that is.

Agreed, Asa. I think it would partly help to keep the NC presenter on for the BBC One bulletins. I've never understood the notion of BBC One needing specific recognisable presenters. Surely after an NC presenter has appeared on BBC One a few times, they'll be recognisable too? So long as they keep the weekend NC presenter rosta fairly stable, there should be a problem. That would cut out having to swap presenters, hearing them click across the N6 floor etc etc.

The sign-off needs to be looked at too. Why can't the BBC One bulletin finish with "That's all from....now a look at the weather." At which point, both BBC One and NC can carry a weather forecast and the NC can pick up from there. There's no need for all these stings and wideshots which just look stupid on the NC.

The more I look it. the awful it looks, look at it Nicholas Owen on a square pod in the middle of nowwhere, the desk design does not match with the studio either with those fake screens, which on the right totally gives the game away...

Do you really think that anyone doesn't know it's not a real newsroom? No-one's that stupid! Even you! It's just a newsy backdrop.

However I don't think they should show the edge of the screens as it makes the set look smaller.

Can someone refresh my memory what facillities N6 has, compared to BBC World?

I was under the impression World has it's own pres facillity, allowing it to play out a separate programme at 930pm, while NC used the studio for half an hour, while the Ten's prepared for?

I'm assuming N6 can only do one thing at a time, preventing both playout of separate prog(Hardtalk for example!) & Ten preparation!

How does the ticker etc appear on the NC, but not on BBC1 ?

BBC World News has its own presentation gallery in the Broadcast Centre. From here, they output several different versions of the channel - they're largely the same, but can have different ads, breaks, programmes in the back half hour, etc. Generally it spends a lot of time with N8 on the mixer.

AFAIK, the main output of N6 goes through a very basic video matrix somewhere in News before going up to the transmission chain in CCA. It is possible to send something else down it, but it's nowhere near as tidy as going via a presentation mixer.

There are a couple of other outputs from N6's mixer - eg the one without the ticker - and this is fed up to the Broadcast Centre for BBC One bulletins as required.

I've always been a bit more confused as far as News 24 was concerned. I know they only had one gallery (used to be N8 ). I guess that N6 delivers a clean feed of the output to BBC One Presentation while a different version (with the ticker) is sent out on the News Channel. Again, this is only a guess on my part. I'm hoping someone like noggin can come along and spell it all out clearly.

Back when N24 was in N8, didn't they used to have an "emergency mixer" which let them take an outside source such as TC7 to air while the N8 gallery was doing rehearsals or training etc, which was used for Breakfast in the old days.

I guess there may be a similar falility now which lets them take N8 while they prep the 10 in N6.

Yes they did. The Network Switcher is in use in N6 - it was moved from N8. It allows different sources, TC7, N8, Signing etc to be routed direct to the News Channel Distribution chain so that the gallery can do recordings, like Spooks for example during Breakfast, and to rehearse/record sequences for the 10.

BBC 1 pick up a clean version of N6 - like they used to do when it produced the 1, 6 and 10, and all Straps for the network programmes are produced via a Reserve Viz, so it appears on a DSK, which means comes through the Vision Mixer desk, and hence appears on N6 Main.

Usually the News Channel straps are added by Main Viz which appears further on down the distribution chain.

You really don't want to see the distribution diagram - it's a total nightmare!! Smile

I think chris lowe or anita mcveigh should just do the BBC1 news on weekends it makes more sense I have never understood why they bring mishal hussain or joanna gosling in when theres someone with over 30 years of newsreading sitting there ready.

Or strengthen the weekend rota to include the likes of Mishal, Emily and Fiona (in addition to Peter and Nick who work well on scheduled bullitens). That way you get rid of the likes of Anita McVeigh (who are as wooden as can get) and save money.

I think its chris fault Anita comes across as wooden I remember her doing a daytime shift a few months ago with Matthew and she was totally different not wooden at all I thought. Like scissons chris is best in BBC1.

Love the HARDtalk backdrop - but it'd be even better if it slowly animated.

They did this the other week. On that occasion Tim did the morning shift in the studio and the afternoon in the City.
