People are already going to be thinking about these things anyway. The only difference is whether people are more informed or less informed as a result of the media speculation. I would argue they will end up being more informed, and that's a good thing.

On some news reports and interviews, months ago, people were making the point that we shouldn't talk ourselves into recession. I too feel that certain broadcasters need to look at what and how they say things. It seems that a lot of the current state of things is a 'confidence' thing and the news chanel(s) need to be careful to be reporting fact and what HAS happened, and not adding fuel to what COULD happen.

Yes I had never seen jon kay on the channel before but Anita Mcveigh has been on the 7-10 friday and 7-0.0 weekend slots since 2005 normally alongside chris lowe I must say the two of them dont like the banter at all I dont think I have ever seen the two of them have a bit banter on air.

BBC News has just played part of the special countdown at 17:20 leading up to the simulcast on BBC One.

It's been pointed out many times before on the forum that BBC World News usually has the opportunity to rehearse the top of the hour sequence so can iron out any missing items, automation niggles, aston misspellings and so-on. This is because the World gallery isn't live on-air the whole time like the News Channel's is. The top of the hour sequence is complicated, fast moving and has many elements: some might require sound cues (bongs or upsounds), some might involve vision effects (like wipes), some may be from playout server, some might be live inserts (which involve caption overlays), some might be from graphics, some might be in-vision. With more automation being introduced, there's more reliance on correct inputting of all this stuff into the system. Some people in a gallery understand this more than others so mistakes get made, bits of technical instructions get overlooked or are put in wrong. With a reahearsal (even a shambolic one) a director has a fighting chance of working out what's required and how it might be achieved even with some information missing. Without rehearsal, you run the risk of the top of the hour being far from perfect. Add into the mix the moving of channels from one gallery to another (as happens before the Ten) or the maintenance of the news channel while trying to sort out a national bulletin (as happens at the weekend of for the One) and it explains a little why things are as they are...

I've raised this point before but the technical standards on the News Channel are beyond farcical. I reckon there is a guaranteed technical error every single hour broadcast; many of these are minor but probably about a quarter are significant. The key point is that to see a technical error on the News Channel is not a surprise; conversely it's the expected norm.
It always disappoints me when insiders on here go on about how technically challenging the TOTH sequence is as if this excuses the regularity of errors. Or how difficult it is to maintain a 24/7 gallery.
Here are a few home truths:
They have dropped a quite technically challenging (and interesting) graphics package for something that is numbingly dull and yet make more mistakes than previously.
They barely use the potential capability of the 'blank canvas' studio and yet make horrible errors with camera views.
The bottom line is this. If things are so complicated that errors are not even remotely a surprise, why are you not simplifying them? Why not strip away anything deemed problematic and get it right every single time? Then you can add in degrees of complication as you can see fit.
Sadly there seems to be a culture of accepting mistakes (which make the channel look shoddy) as if the BBC are unique in trying to broadcast a news channel 24 (actually make that about 20) hours a day. I don't want to sound harsh, but I really hope the self-pitying attitude of some departments subject to budget cuts has not spread to news leading to a frank laziness of production and lack of caring about standards.

One of the most problematic periods seems to be weekdays 2130 - 2200 , why not resolve this by moving "HardTalk" into that slot and transmitting rolling news in the 2330 - 0000 slot. IMHO the "Question Time Extra" thing on Thursday's could be scrubbed. Most people watching QT would stay watching BBC ONE for |"This Week" anyway.

Good idea, but wouldn't having to prepare for the Ten get in the way?
I'm assuming that N6 not having a separate playout gallery like World would preclude this!
(Obviously I'm probably wrong!)
