The examples you gave are fairly accurate descriptions of the stories. They certainly give me an indication as to what the report will be about. These are only on the screen briefly and are accompanied by video anyway; you can't throw too much information at people when there isn't time to take a great deal of it on board.
I can remember Stu posting this, quite a while back too:
StuartPlymouth posted:
The TOTH countdown failed to start at 2am. The audio was wrong, and we were treated to some odd replacements to the usual video, including, briefly, a slide stuck at 55:00 seconds.
But there also exists a longer version than that though, as quite frequently they use one longer than 55 seconds before the News at 10 O'clock, starting off with no numbers and then they come in at 60 (well 59:23).

Yeah - I think they must use the 55 sec versions normally, throughout the day/night and the 90 second version just before the News at Ten and also before the overnight simulcast at 1am.
There isn't a 55 second countdown. Only a 60 or 90 sec version. Reason it starts with 55 is because the last 5 seconds of the countdown are where it forms the BBC News emblem.

That was what I meant to say, I should've said that it just
starts
at 55 seconds!

The music is also cut short, well at least in accordance to the versions posted on David Lowe's site as they have a thunderclap at the beginning.
The news channel has a new 'countdown' graphic, which has been on during every report from Beijing - I assume we'll be seeing it all week leading up to the games.

Noticed that and it just looks vile. It's not connected to the usual Headline Name and Information strap either (there's an olympic logo underneath which is far more distracting than the old News 24 tower). It doesn't line up and why is the time so far to the right?

Looks poor. The red box is too short so the timer sticks out and even then it does line up with the left hand side of the Headline Strap and the Ticker. Perhaps it will be better when we get closer to the games and the countdown is shorter.

Aside from how sh*t it looks, what purpose does it provide? It's useless. For those interested in the Olympics, they'll know they start on Friday. They don't need to know how much time is left to the nearest minute.
Honestly, what the hell has happened to BBC News? I was watching France 24 last week in Paris. Better studio, better graphics, more interesting to watch. Stop bodging and start spending BBC!

You've got a good point. It serves no purpose and looks awful.
