I know I'm going to be flamed for this, but sobeit

I, and I'm sure most of us here, fully appreciate that TOTH headline sequences are difficult. There is a lot of video to get to play at the right time, audio to sync up, graphics, titles and straps to apply. It's a high pressure environment in which most people would fail to provide perfection 100% of the time.

But that's just it. If it can't be relied upon 100% of the time, it just shouldn't be live. Newsnight's opening always looks fantastic. You never get any gaffes there. But it's prerecorded, so the pressure's not off, but is significantly lower. If 1 minute of TOTH was recorded during the weather then any problems could be rush-sorted out and if all DID go titsup there's still the opportunity for it to be broadcast live as a last resort.

Now obviously this isn't perfect and doesn't allow time for presenter switchovers, but an extended weather bulletin and a few more promos could easily fill that buffer every four hours.

Long and short of it is if it can't be done, don't do it.

It just makes the channel look shít.

It's not the fact it is live that is the problem, it's that there is no rehersal. Newsnight sometimes do their headlines live and World always do. But they both have a chance to run through the heads at least once. That makes all the differrence

Absolutely, rehearsing gives everyone a chance to make sure everything is good to go and as has been pointed out, the more complicated the sequence gets, the more there is to go wrong. If there are the number of TOTH problems that some forumers believe are happening, then maybe they've got to the stage where they've pushed everything to the absolute limit. They either need to let something in the sequence go (aston straps would be my suggestion) or find a way of rehearsing the sequence. As The News Channel goes directly to air from the gallery, that isn't particularly easy to achieve, whereas of course, the World News gallery isn't on air until presentation cut to them at the top of the hour, so rehearsals are no problem (that said, World News are not totally immune to TOTH catastophies!)

I know its additional cost, but why can't News Channel have their own pres unit?

You've answered your own question - cost and what's the point? It's not like World who have lots of streams to control around the globe etc. Why pay a whole department to play in the weather and promos which is basically what it would do.

I take it the person typing out the headlines on the ticker this morning is drunk or illiterate; I've counted no fewer than 7 spelling mistakes, some of which have gone uncorrected for over an hour.

Including:
"Minsiter" (Minister)
"Commited" (Committed)
"Immeadate" (Immediate)
"Siucide" (Suicide)
"20007" (2007)

Absolutely disgraceful.

Watching Dateline London and to me that studio is so dull and lifeless, seriously get BBC World in there and get the News Channel where it belongs in N8!!!!

Did you just use Dateline as an excuse to say how bad you think it looks? Cos you've said it many times before and we are not going to forget it anytime soon! lol

The technical standards on the channel are improving well done to the Gallery guys for sorting out the past problems! Smile

Why, though - can't the on-shift news channel presenter present the News Summaries or Bulletins on BBC one and the News channel at the weekends? We leave Sophie Long and Chris Lowe and then Joanna Gosling pops up... it's a 10-15 minute news summary - why does it need a separate presenter doing the bulletin.... whats wrong with Chris Lowe (who at the end of the day a main bulletin presenter in the past) or even Sophie Long presenting it?

It's not keeping any consistency on the channel all this (really pointless) changing of presenters left right and centre and surely it's costing them more money (what they are trying to save).

I know it may need some prep for the summary but does it warrant a separate presenter? Probably not.

I can't understand why BBC one can't opt into the news channel for the bulletin rather than the News channel opting over to BBC one.

On a separate note - why don't the presenters ever present any part of the bulletin away from the desk - it does look rather stuffy being presented behind the desk all the time. It'd be nice to see the presenters present the odd story against the screens.

NO ... Thankfully that abberation of an American approach is being reduced to a bare minimum, gravitas in news demands a desk to sit at. Not a wander and point.

Now I know that the 'stand-up news' thing is something often discussed, but I agree with Worzel that possibly one story (the top one probs but could be another) should be done stood up.

The 10 begins stood-up, and the 6 always used to stand for a 'special report'. A standing story would help them use the screens to the full and may make the box look bigger Very Happy

Also agree on the pointless 'presenter-shifting' - surely the whole move was to save cost, so the NC presenters should just stay on for the bulletins Rolling Eyes

True but for some feature items, like the Six Special Report, I think standing up works as features don't tend to require the same level of gravitas as regular news items. It also adds some variety in presentation style and would make full use of the screens.

If we wanted to lower the formality completely we could always do what Ian White used to do on the Look North 1520 News Update a few years back and perch himself on the edge of the desk to present.
