Impossible to record TOTH during the weather. Apart from the fact that the weather can sometimes only be a minute's duration anyway, there simply isn't enough time to set up, put the gallery into bypass (News Channel goes straight to air so any prerec has to be done with the network in emergency bypass mode), run to record, do the sequence, check it's stuck, clip it up etc and get to the top of the hour. There are of course presenter changes which won't help. And you'd only have one chance to get it right with such a tight turnaround.

They could just do what Sky do and not bother with a TOTH!

That statement doesn't deserve a proper answer, Moz.

I also don't see the need for the captions underneath with the headline name either which were introduced in 2007 (I often find them quite patronising to be honest).

I've been watching News 24 since 2000 and I've noticed that as the TOTH sequences have become more complex, there have been many more mistakes. They need to strip it back to how it was in 1999/2000. Headline Vamp runs throughout with no re-starts, no straps, just pictures and a wipe between headlines, followed by titles.

Why? Sky don't have a TOTH, they just have a coming up sequence, headlines and a sting.

I, and I'm sure most of us here, fully appreciate that TOTH headline sequences are difficult. There is a lot of video to get to play at the right time, audio to sync up, graphics, titles and straps to apply. It's a high pressure environment in which most people would fail to provide perfection 100% of the time.

But that's just it. If it can't be relied upon 100% of the time, it just shouldn't be live. Newsnight's opening always looks fantastic. You never get any gaffes there. But it's prerecorded, so the pressure's not off, but is significantly lower. If 1 minute of TOTH was recorded during the weather then any problems could be rush-sorted out and if all DID go titsup there's still the opportunity for it to be broadcast live as a last resort.

Now obviously this isn't perfect and doesn't allow time for presenter switchovers, but an extended weather bulletin and a few more promos could easily fill that buffer every four hours.

Long and short of it is if it can't be done, don't do it.

It just makes the channel look shít.

It's not the fact it is live that is the problem, it's that there is no rehersal. Newsnight sometimes do their headlines live and World always do. But they both have a chance to run through the heads at least once. That makes all the differrence

Is it better for it?

No! They used to have a fantastic TOTH when they moved into their current studio. Now they have nothing.

Absolutely, rehearsing gives everyone a chance to make sure everything is good to go and as has been pointed out, the more complicated the sequence gets, the more there is to go wrong. If there are the number of TOTH problems that some forumers believe are happening, then maybe they've got to the stage where they've pushed everything to the absolute limit. They either need to let something in the sequence go (aston straps would be my suggestion) or find a way of rehearsing the sequence. As The News Channel goes directly to air from the gallery, that isn't particularly easy to achieve, whereas of course, the World News gallery isn't on air until presentation cut to them at the top of the hour, so rehearsals are no problem (that said, World News are not totally immune to TOTH catastophies!)
