It's actually very difficult. Many news programmes you watch will pre record their headlines. It uses the gallery to it's limits

That's right. ITV News pre-record their opening sequences about 10-15 minutes before transmission. When you think about how many clips, sounds and graphics need to be lined up in such a short space of time, it's not surprising ITN opt to pre-record them. The BBC always do theirs live so hats off to the gallery teams because the vast majority of them pass by without incident.

I'm sure they are incredibly difficult to get right with all the different clips, graphics, titles, music etc. that are needed. However why are things worse now than when it was N24? TOTHs weren't regularly messed up then yet since the rebrand things seem to have got worse.

Bare in mind that there are thunderclaps after each headline so the track is restarted (I think), which they didn't do on N24. It was just a continuous bed that didn't need to be altered.

I don't think the transition 'swoop' was as technical or significant on N24 as it is now after each headline.

I seem to recall they had a loop of the wipe animation before April which they used to just flash onscreen momentarily between headlines. ITV News does a similar thing during the news wrap and heads. However, now, it seems more complicated.

A dry thunderclap is played over a continuous bed, which starts off with a thunderclap.

Then why did they change it to make it more complicated but not as reliable? Doesn't make sense to me.

No, they just re-start the vamp. They have done that with every vamp since 2004.

I thought they did.

At the end of the day, technical intricacies don't matter to the average viewer.

If you're going to run a 24 hour news channel and attempt to make it look professional, cockups should be a surprising event, not an hourly reality.

The "how, ifs, buts" are all irrelevant.

Pass off without incident, at the moment it seems that most pass by with incident. Wink

Loved that line! Comment of the week!

On another note - whilst trooling through the net I found this on Wikipedia (don't know how true it is)...

Very much doubt the above schedule is true - why would they call the bullitins "BBC Newsroom" after all this big hype about "it's BBC NEWS - nothing else"?

Plus, I don't think the BBC are into the whole "Live with...X" like SKY.
