Because, regardless of the rationality of the argument, it never ends well when the BBC public declares that it is cutting funding for news while continuing to pay for Strictly Come Dancing / Joey Essex / Can't Touch This / Eastenders / Holby City / whatever this week's light entertainment lightning-rod of the week happens to be.

Can I remind you that the BBC mission values are to 'inform, educate and entertain'

Something it does quite well. And, guess what?
Because of that statement, it'll make and broadcast programmes that you don't like or would not want to watch.
It's called public service broadcasting.

Seems to me, you would revise that mission statement to be 'inform, educate, and err....'

Ditch BBC News channel altogether - air BBC World News sans adverts & sponsors in the UK.

Creatively schedule both editions of the channel in tandem so as to maximise the use of studios/staff.

Isn't that what they effectively do for much of the time?

It's one thing to rationalise the NC to allow use of WN programmes, but quite another to let the 'great unwashed' realise that you are airing a sanitised version of a commercial channel as part of your PSB commitment.

Well no, I wouldn't, because I don't think the argument is rational - hence saying "regardless of the rationality of the argument". It's an argument at the same level as the political refrain "Why are we spending money on X instead of spending it on the NHS?"

I'm just trying to describe why the BBC is coy about talking about cuts in relation to news as opposed to, say, cuts in relation to BBC Two daytime.

Moz posted:
Sam Taylor has to go. The channel has got worse and worse since he took over.

Bring back proper 24/7 BBC News 24!

What makes you think it's entirely his fault? There are other forces at work here.

Because it all started going down hill when he started, and watching him he seems a snivelling weed.

Moz will probably disagree with everything i am about to say... ho hum. Wink

For example... World News presenters give UK news during the breaks and back half hours where needed. Replace some front half hour programmes with UK only opts during peak UK viewing times. or... When International viewers are watching a recorded programme, Domestic viewers see UK News.

Ditch all the simulcasts of BBC One/Two etc programmes.
No Breakfast, No Derbyshire, No PMQ's, No 1, 6 & 10, No Newsnight. The World News programmes are being made anyway why not allow UK viewers to choose what they want to watch instead of having the same programme on several separate channels.

...and fix the damn ticker its embarrasing.

Actually, some of what you say I agree with, but just the bit about replacing BBC One/Two simulcasts/repeats with BBC World simulcasts. I'd much rather see BBC World on the News Channel than BBC Breakfast, the 1/6/10 and Newsnight.

The News Channel is not part of the BBC's PSB news commitment though, is it ? Surely it's only the core bulletins on BBC 1 that are ?

The BBC doesn't really have specific commitments in the sense that ITV has to do a certain minutage of news a week - the BBC simply is a Public Service Broadcaster. In theory everything the BBC does, should be a public service. That has always led to a debate over whether that means stuff it does is popular . The argument often comes up that it shouldn't have a pop radio station, as commercial stations do that very well (almost exclusively in fact). However the BBC would always argue that Radio 1 isn't just a pop station and provides programmes and services that the commercial sector won't touch (like 2 lengthy news programmes each weekday).

I'd say, given the competition, a 24 hour news channel without commercial commitments or editorial stance is the very heart of Public Service Broadcasting.

Wasn't there supposed to be a new 'Nations & Regions' programme starting in the evenings?

Whats the deal with Newsroom live? from 11am - 1pm? Also did it start a few weeks ago when the cuts come in? how often do you get 70 sec countdowns before the 1pm news:

Is this a filler programme during the local opt Outs? Have they ever considered taking a quick look at the rundowns of stories across the different regions and deciding to take the full broadcast that seems most interesting to viewers.

BBC News needs to update the 'live' loop they use as the background for DTL interviews from the newsroom.

It seems they have recently replaced the red fabric barrier in the reception area overlooking the newsroom with a more permanent semi-transparent covering on the glass, which looks much better.

Does the Newsroom Live presenter now provide news summaries into the Victoria Derbyshire programme?
