I know red is the defining brand colour of BBC News - but that map just looks awful.

It's not a direct comparison, but the style of map (courtesy of TV Ark) used by the BBC 15+ years ago looks better to me. A slightly larger colour palette to play with, but still clearly part of a consistent visual family.

Looks fine to me. Red/Grey/White are all core BBC News brand colours. This style is one of a couple of map styles available, one of the others being a Google Earth type satellite one, but on maps with a large geographical area like this example, that tends to end up as just a huge area of green and brown (plus blue for the sea of course).

A lot of maps used on BBC news are generated from within a viz template, and there are pretty limited options available as to what you can do when using a template. You can get maps commissioned via the graphics department (and I'm guessing that is one that's been designed as it has arrows on it.).

Admittedly I'm not keen on the sea being white...

It's not the best colour scheme especially when it blends in with the ticker at the bottom (also various shades of red).

The BBC have got themselves into an excellent position to cover the protest in Brussels.

Anna Holigan and her camera operator are doing a superb job covering the events.

A bit off topic for this thread I guess, but then he does present the film review on the news channel- Mark Kermode was sat 6 rows in front of me on my flight to Atlanta today. I'm a bit star struck even though I didn't even speak to him, which I guess shows how empty my life is...

I wouldn't have bothered him either you have a seven or eight hour flight. I imagine he would want to rest without a person noticing you on the flight as well.

He was with his family as well, so I imagine he'd be as amused at being harrassed as any of us would be. I've got common sense there, unlike plenty of other people out there who are all over everyone famous they see wanting selfies and autographs.
