Didn’t I read somewhere that VDP rebrands tomorrow?

They said definitely February. Which February they didn't state. With the glacial speed of Reith implementation so far I'd wager it's February 2020.

Seriously, I hear all the stuff about how complicated it is, but it really shouldn't be should it. If you worked for any other company in the world and told someone it'd take several years to implement a change of font, you'd lose your job. It shows how archaic the BBC is. It needs to modernise its way of working or it'll die. And yes, I know people will say it's only a font and that most people won't notice so it's not priority, but it's just symptomatic of the sluggish inefficient machine that such a simple change is made so difficult.

You will notice the change. I promise. It’s not just a change of font.

Except that's not true, is it? Supermarkets are an obvious example of long implementation times for font changes.

Maybe over where you are. But I’ve seen changes here (rebranding /ownership changes) over night where all the signage (both paper and more physical) in the store and simple things like price tags are changed. The longest was a month, but they closed the store to do complete systemic upgrades and redesign.

Such major changes are possible to plan for and implement on a single day.

I'm sure it's perhaps a legal requirement with banks, but when they merge/de-merge, absolutely everything is changed on the same day - usually within a matter of hours. Websites, signage, stationery, even the metal plaque outside the door . . . etc

Possible yes – but not cheap!

Is this a case of me misremembering, or didn’t the BBC manage a branding overhaul pretty quickly in 1997 when the current logo was introduced?

Yes, even as far as modifying a set of technical drawings to change the logo in the title blocks, that they sent me on the Monday morning after the change !

Well if the new graphics look as good as these on The Nine, it’ll be worth the wait...
