Victoria Derbyshire must have been haemorrhaging money for it to be cheaper to pay an additional presenter rather than keep the show at 2 hours.

Aren't they just utilising people who are already on shift? Wouldn't they already be there in the newsroom providing the news updates during Derbyshire?

No. It was usually the Newsroom Live presenter who would read the headlines during VD. Now, it's the presenter of News at 9.

It does seem strange, as previously mentioned, that they now have another presenter on shift every day.

So I recorded the whole BBC News at 9, just to see what they're doing in that bulletin. The first 30 mins is just a normal BBC News bulletin with interviews and the like. The second 30 mins is quite significantly different:

* At half-past, just after the headlines, they have a section called "Morning Briefing", which from first glance is just a roundup of some important stories (sounds like it's copying "The Briefing" a little bit).
* After "Morning Briefing", it's sport from the Sports Center, which includes the usual sports bulletin, but there's a little bit from social media, then a look at the back pages of the morning papers.

The programme ends as a normal bulletin, with no specific Business news at all, beyond a look at the markets. Overall it looks okay, and it's good to see more bulletins being created. Maybe in time, they will return the double-headed presentation in the mornings! Surprised

EDIT: Didn't realise someone already mentioned all the changes. Razz

If they shorten VD by another hour, they've got it just about right.

Totally agree! 50% of the way there!

That is very strange so there is now a presenter who does 09-11, another who does 11-13 and VD does 10-11? As mentioned above, VD must have been too resource-intensive. I think this time slot will kill it given that at 9am it had a decent run in from Breakfast , it was on just before The Wright Stuff and still managed to stand up against the 9am hours on Sky, CNN, AJE etc which are all relatively weak. However at 10am it has more competition from both news and features and now if “there’s already the 9am presenter there and they’ve only been on air for one hour...”

And we'll propably get the other 50% in March (aka the end of the financial year!)

Would make sense if Victoria is on yearly contracts as her show started in the April (of 2015).

What happens if a major news story breaks during the News at Nine? Will that presenter continue to develop the story or will VD arrive for one hour? Seems a little messy

Generally I thought the bulletin worked well.

Would have preferred to see better use of the catwalk (it wasn't used at all!). The Morning Briefing would certainly benefit from being presented in that way with there being quite a lot of visuals. They could utilise some pretty impressive graphics. Bit of a missed opportunity.

Would have liked to see them venture out of their comfort zone and have some proper presentation from out in the newsroom or from the weather balcony (apart from the weather itself!). I still think it's a presentation point that is very much underused (except for OS).

Most of the above is personal opinion, but as we've seen with channels like Franceinfo, they give bulletins a bit of energy and edge (and are popular with younger audiences).

Were the VD headlines presented from the newsroom or studio E?

From Studio E interestingly enough.

VD felt like they tried to squash two hours worth of guests into 57 minutes. No longer headlines on the half hour or a sports bulletin with a casual dressed presenter and still very human interest skewed with features on gender identity and people with learning difficulties dying earlier. Now feels even more out of place, considering it's sandwiched between rolling news hours.

The 9am hour is most welcome and a massive improvement on the output on 9am last Friday.
