They don't use it if they are joining a BBC One simulcast, as BBC One may not be on time to the second, but there shouldn't be any other reason not to use it.

They seem to be using it for all hours though. Did into 16:00, which isn't simulcast.

[EDIT] Countdown into the 17:00 hour, but I'm seeing many TOHs without the countdown at the moment. (Hours without simulcasts.)

Perhaps using it in error then. I've also seen a few occasions where they've managed to finish the weather or trailers bang on and straight into TOTH.

Watching the news channel over the past few days, I've noticed that quite often the "live" bug appears a darker shade of red to the rest of the graphics such as the ticker, but when it is used again on another OB it often goes back to the usual shade of red, is this simply a mistake or is there a reason for this?

I think when the BBC Sport Centre first began broadcasting, it was darker for some reason. I don't know if this is still the case, it could be that?

Why isn't the BBC News Channel using the countdown at the TOH? It's the version without the countdown that just fades out, being used.

They seem to use it every now and again, not quite sure why, maybe there's a problem with the numbered countdown? Not complaining though as I actually prefer the filler countdown music.

A large protest on College Green looks right now looks like it'll probably scupper any plans to present the Ten from there this evening, but the BBC's platform there is providing a handy place for Chris Mason to present his inserts into Outside Source.

Ended up being presented by Sophie Raworth from BH. Were it not for the Istanbul Airport story I think Fiona would have opened the programme from Brussels, as she did for the 6.

Yes, I'm sure this was the intention. I was quite surprised to see Fiona Bruce in Brussels, but it's clear she was meant to be anchoring from there, until events in Istanbul took the focus away.

They seem to use the filler countdown if the TOTH is coming from a location rather than the studio. Maybe they use it just in case they don't hit the TOTH spot on due to timing delays on cue ins?

For some reason "Why a mother had to visit the place her son died" is the lead on the ticker, which is a headline from a Magazine article (here), not a news story, and certainly isn't ticker-friendly.

It's also showing "Who should follow Roy Hodgson out of England?" which - obviously - is a question, not a ticker headline...

I think overnight they switch to using the headlines from the RSS feed, which has been brought up before, I don't know why they haven't created a unique RSS feed for the ticker that filters out headlines with a question mark at the end. It wouldn't be much better but would at least cut out a lot of the more incomprehensible headlines.
