Looks like the NC failed to get a live translation for the Pope's speech in Dublin. Anita McVeigh talking over it.

There was also another clanger during the Pope's arrival at Dublin Airport, Annita McVeigh handed back to Shaun who's mic was off, so they crashed into the latter half of The Travel Show.

I happened to be watching TV earlier when Pope Francis was praying in the cathedral in Dublin. It really irritates me the way broadcasters insist on speaking all over everything all the time. Why can't we just be left to experience it as it is? The Pope was in a quiet moment of prayer and it might have been nice for the viewer to be experience the silence and contemplation. Instead, we had BBC News and Sky News presenters nattering away all over it. As far as I could tell, CNN at least allowed a period of silence during the prayer, so credit where it's due.

I noticed a few numeral-free countdowns today on the NC, perhaps due to simulcaasting their TOTHs with BBC World News because of the live intros from Dublin.

However, it is rather irritating that more than 10 years after the rebrand, many of their presenters still refer to themselves as ' . . . broadcasting on BBC World'. The international channel is called 'BBC World News'.

Sally Bundock on 'The Briefing' is another regular branding offender. Shocked

Add Victoria Derbyshire to that list during the recent attack on Westminster.

So the rebrand may not have been the best idea.

..That and not saying goodbye to UK viewers at 05.54.
It's even more irritating when you know she is clearly padding out to the junction, by reading out a tweet.

It takes 5 seconds to say "BBC World viewers, we'll see you in a few minutes - BBC One viewers, thanks for watching and Breakfast is on next. Wherever you are, goodbye"

Maybe she thinks no one ( much) is watching BBC 1 at 05:54 in the morning, she might be right 😎

The only bit that RTÉ did to talk over the Pope while speaking was to have an interpreter over his speeches. The only problem was that there was a priest alongside Pope Francis translating his speeches in English & a female interpreter named Manuela Spinelli who worked as translator for the former Republic of Ireland football manager Giovanni Trappatoni.

Is the BBC NC & BBC World News broadcasting the Papal Mass live from The Phoenix Park today?

It appears that the NC is now airing an extra edition of The Film Review to fill time after coverage of the Pope arriving in the Phoenix Park, while on WN they are airing an additional 15 minute bulletin presented by Samantha Simmonds.

Going a bit off topic here... There has been a lot of abrupt programming interruptions during these two days on WN due to coverage of the Pope in Ireland. There are a lot of instances where they just cut right into a middle of an interview or the NC's feed without the presenters and reporters acknowledging the viewers who just joined them.

Ooh, a dodgy and somewhat unfortunate edit on the McCain obituary piece just there:

Quote:
"Ultimately, he was to lose to history, in the form of America's first black."

Just "first black" and then straight into a bit from McCain's concession speech.

Next week's Newswatch will be interesting.
