Weather has returned to the balcony today complete with trundle cam, or at least it has for the 13:56 forecast!

That is the only time the weather will broadcast from the balcony now, most likely due to Afternoon Live requirements, and it is not consistently broadcast from there. Every other time, it’s the green screen studio or actually in C/E (for news at one, news at five and news at 6 when it’s c/e)

What's stopping them from using it on BBC Newsroom Live? For a show called 'Newsroom Live' you'd have thought having some presentation out in the newsroom itself would be somewhat relevant.

Are you referring to use it for news presentation or weather? The weather reason is that forecasts on Newsroom Live moved to Salford with Simon King which presumably was when MeteoGroup replaced the Met Office. Ironically I think those forecasts actually come from the Salford down the line position in their newsroom.

Nope, even before MeteoGroup took over, all morning weather broadcasts on the news channel came from Salford, the only time it came from the balcony is when Simon was not available to present.

I dont know when the change happened, but it was mid-2017 or just before Afternoon Live started broadcasting, when the balcony saw less use. As of the Meteogroup changeover, it is only the 2pm broadcast every day that has a chance to use it, which isn’t consistent either.

Do no weekend bulletins not use it?

Presumably mornings don't either because the Victoria Derbyshire forecasts are in studio B and Newsroom Live forecasts are from Salford (though do they not do any from the balcony when Simon King is on holiday).

To respond to this point, i think some weekend bulletins use it, but i believe it’s only during the same broadcast time (pre-2pm toth), and simialrly to the weekday bulletin, it’s not consistent (although wherever it comes from is a live broadcast). I dont know if it’s a case of the graphics not working effectively on the screen or what, but for whatever reason, they just want pre-recorded weather bulletins nearly all of the time.

To give an example: when Afternoon Live first launched, every half-past weather bulletin was in the studio with Simon directly. Recently, this was cut to just the 2.30 and 4.30pm segments, with 3.00/3.30/4.00pm bulletins just being a pre-recorded segment from the Green Screen studio.

I wonder if they've reduced a shift somewhere and by using pre-recorded forecast they can make it work to allow the duty forecaster a break?

It's possible, but even with the reduced shift, they could still very easily use the balcony studio much more often for weather broadcasts, or indeed have multiple weather broadcasters throughout the day, since the weather bulletins are basically timed like this:
* 8.30am - 12pm: Simon King from Salford (random presenter from GS studio if Simon not available)
* 12.30pm - 6.30pm: Presenter through News at One, Afternoon Live, News at Five, News at Six (with 1.30 - 2.30pm, 4.30pm and 5.30 - 6.30pm being live broadcasts, the rest all pre-recorded)
* 7pm - 11pm: Another presenter, most of which is pre-recorded segments (but with a chance of 7pm and 9pm being live)
* 12am - 8.30am: Overnight presenter, with only the 12am TOTH being live, the rest is pre-recorded / Breakfast simulcasts

If breaks are the issue, then the 6 hour broadcast shift of weather could be split up by two presenters, one for the named bulletins at 1pm, 5pm and 6pm, and another for Afternoon Live/NC broadcasts. I believe the same shift schedule happens for weekends, though the morning is far less and there are many more pre-recorded bulletins used.

NC now simulcasting with WN for continuing coverage of the 4 child going out safely in the Thai cave rescue operation. At around 15:41 NC cut to Studio C feed abruptly (?). At 16:00 NC and WN are in Studio E with Lukwesa Burak.

It's been alternating between NC and WN every hour. I would imagine it'll go back to WN at 5pm BST.

Fascinating coverage on both the BBC and Sky but no other news at all, not even in brief, when really you get the just of the story in the headline sequence alone and much of the hour is spent asking three separate guests basically the same questions.

At least it should stop the moaners on Newswatch complaining about them just showing the football 24 hours a day.

The weather presenters also appear on radio and sometimes world during their shifts and may provide guidance to the autocue readers in the regions who pretend to know about meteorology (the few regions with properly qualified forecasters have less interaction with London from what I've read in the past.

I thought most World News weather broadcasts were just pre-recorded and repeated, and weren't actually live, due to the difficulty of making a live broadcast

On a separate note, the balcony studio was used for a pre-recorded segment about the weather in Thailand for the rescue efforts, so it's clearly usable with the new graphics, shame they don't use it more often for News Channel!

If I recall, there's a daily conference between the nations and regions on-duty presenter and BH.
