I was surprised that they weren't able to switch to static image of the front pages once they clearly had an issue. They did at one point use the desk snoop shot.

The fact he's interviewing a puppet ??? On BBC News. Do you need more evidence? Are you seriously suggesting that 10+ years ago BBC News 24 would have interviewed a puppet? That's dumbing down enough for me from a world-renowned broadcaster like the BBC. But like I say, that's the times we live in for you.

Don't watch tonight's NewsDay then. Cookie Monster was interviewed about his "guide to life", complete with name aston.

I suppose it depends if they would caption a fictional character, for example if there was an interview with Alan Partridge. If they would then I don't see an issue with captioning a puppet

The NC really needs to stop broadcasting ~5 minute paper reviews after the News at Ten, if it is broadcast late. There really is no point in it, as was demonstrated tonight. News at Ten finished at 22.40, Sportsday finished just after 22.50, with basically ~4 minutes for any meaningful paper review.

In cases like this, Sportsday should broadcast right up to the TOTH, or it should just return to the studio to discuss the main story of the day. The Papers should then be broadcast from 11.30pm to midnight, before the switch over to World News simulcasting, providing more papers and more discussion.

...Or simply broadcast the weather for the week ahead again at 10:53/10:54.

They also need to stop doing a News channel TOTH at 10pm from the screen and then almost straight out of the titles say 'we're going to be joined by viewers on BBC One for the News at Ten with Huw Edwards next' - cue the filler, and then the same TOTH all over again 5 minutes later.

With a bit of forward planning and due to the Heathrow vote, it wouldn't of hurt to put Shaun in studio A and drop the Ten from the News channel for tonight... or would that be too sensible? Everyone in the media knew the vote was going to be just after ten.

Simulcasting the main bulletins is all about saving money so unless there is a major ongoing story, they won't break away for a separate bulletin. The Heathrow expansion was big news but once the vote was announced, that was it and there wouldn't be much more to add. A simple update from Huw did what it needed to do last night.

Because the BBC NC sometimes gets five minute gaps to fill when the national bulletins are delayed, I'm surprised they haven't considered a version of a graphical filler that loops news stories, weather and finance until the bulletin is ready to play. A bit like the one BBC World had for regions that didn't show commercials. Might look a bit smoother than a presenter filling by commenting on a story that gets mentioned again two minutes later in the main bulletin itself.

In other news, keep an eye on BBC News over the next few days as today marks the roll out from using ENPS (the news management system used by journalists to help put and keep BBC news on air) to Open Media. Not sure why they decided to do this on a Tuesday but I'm sure it made sense to someone somewhere! I think Five Live and Breakfast have been using it for a few months but this is one of the bigger roll outs of it.

You might see a lot of bedazzled people in the newsroom being helped by lots of BBC techies this week!

Chris Mason tweeted pictures of the old and new system last year...

That’s the problem with News Channel which unfortunately can’t go away as it spends too much time simulcasting and some of it it shouldn’t be simulcasting at all like BBC Breakfast, most people will watch on BBC one and SD, show European Breakfast or something instead and Victoria Derbyshire that’s a magazine/debate show if it needs to simulcast show GMT.

I agree that they shouldn't simulcast Breakfast if a good alternative is available from World, but I think that in the present political climate, a programme with that name would be asking for Daily Mail headlines.

Is that a valid reason for not doing something?
