so what’s wrong with Studio E?

When it's shut for a weekend, it's normally for routine maintenance, like electrical safety testing.

Or...rehearsals for a big news event.

Considering there are two people sat in the presenters seats, I'm guessing rehearsals.

The TOTH sequence is still so messed up, despite they've used Studio D for the whole morning already... Rolling Eyes

By the way, this is the screenshot from the TOTH sequence at 1PM. Unless the opening shot is pre-recorded, but it seems like Studio E is occupied for some recordings or rehearsals.

I have just watched back the TOTH on BBC iPlayer. Christ, it’s a mess.

It looks like the back of Simon McCoy’s head in Studio E doing rehearsals.

It seems that the BBC News Channel will be preempting "Witness" at 13:30 so they can bring coverage of the Olympic Curling Finals between GB and Japan to the viewers.

The camera in the newsroom is only linked up to Studio E, so when another studio is being used, such as today Studio D, or Studio C during the week for the 5 o'clock hour they use a recorded shot of the newsroom as the galleries for A, B, C and D cannot use the newsroom cam.

Pretty sure the same camera-pan has been the same at all of the TOTH this morning, so likely to be pre-recorded. That would imply maintenance perhaps.

Yup, that's a pre-recorded sequence, probably from quite early on in transmission history when the BBC moved to NBH. You can see the same two people getting up at one of the desks every time it is played, so it's likely maintenance or some sort of rehearsal being done in the main studio.

You can tell it's an old recording because the windows in the reception area above E still have the barriers rather than the red coloured glass.

To be fair, BBC News have a very versatile set-up in NBH for such eventualities. Most of their studios can be lit to look the same when required; and I doubt 'Joe Public' spotted that the national bulletin at 2pm today came from anywhere different.

It looks as though they even moved 2 cameras in to shot to replicate some of the Furios which normally appear at the end of the headline sequence in E. The 2 cameras weren't used during the bulletin as far as I can tell, and certainly not in those positions, so I can't imagine any other motive for them being there.

My Bad . . . Rolling Eyes One of those cameras was used for this shot . . .

It's almost perfect... They just need to replace the background with the Newsroom shot viewed directly from Studio E. Then it would be a perfect replica of E!

A perfect replica, except for the fact the set is the wrong shape and there are lightboxes above and below the newsroom suddenly?

Bit weird that the TOTHs in D today have been less than slick - overnights have came from D before and the shots were still timed nicely on that occasion. I'm sure once they even went to the effort of recreating the shot from Studio E of a camera slowly moving around the desk at the side for the 'Also this hour' headline!

They used either a live picture at the end of the national bulletin, or an updated recording:
