Have they done that recently - and was it for FA Cup stuff? Red Button - as in the linear channel - is being phased out slowly, and I think it is now no longer handled by Red Bee (aka Ericsson) and I'm not sure how easy it is to schedule change at short notice (and as you say it was already carrying other content).
Had the penalties finished by 2200?

Not quite the case - the BBC on occasion have shifted post match analysis to the red button in the event of an overrun.

22:00 was early in extra time, the penalties didn't start until after 22:30 let alone 22:00

It might be a technical innovation but it's a visual mess. To quote a late director of note, when scrutinising a draft set design, "it looks as if someone has thrown up all over the screen!".
We should call this a refresh instead of a rebrand.
It's nice that the Beeb have utilised the new graphics for this improved look although it doesn't improve the look of the programme very much. This type of software is normally used when displaying live twitter feeds on Afternoon Live. Correct?

Indeed. In fact what were ITV's NaT figures for that night ?
No, the match went to extra to me and penalties so the live action continued past the scheduled finish time of the news.
People are making a bigger deal of it than necessary - most viewers just accept it and if that desperate for the news they didn't even need to find the news channel - News at Ten was on air on ITV.

The BBC GEL site has a new feature going into more detail about the design of the
BBC Reith
font, and how it will be adopted by various parts of the BBC.
Does anyone know when BBC News online and on screen will refresh to include it. It seem (at least online) BBC News will make nice use of the Serif fonts, and it could very well look distinctive and fresh if the new on-screen presentation were to be more playful and designed around typography in the future.

I really hope that they do use text a bit more playfully, as you describe. Hopefully when Reith is introduced to News, it will be more fundamental than swapping one font for the other.

In the not too distant future, you can expect a fairly simple replacement on the website and apps, with Reith Serif for headlines, some navigation pointers etc. while Sans will be the main body typeface. When the new article format launches later in the year there will be some more interesting uses for pull quotes etc. As for TV, Serif is likely to feature in the straps, with text animation similar to the current digital video templates, but I'm not sure how far along these are, so may well end up quite different!

I would hope the main channels (except BBC Three and CBBC) will get new logos soon, custom drawn obviously, but ones that fit nicely with BBC Reith (which would be used for trailers, endboards, etc)
Very interesting video on that page. 2:37 confirms that the BBC logo isn't changing, nor are 'flagship' brand logos like the TV channels or iPlayer, but most other elements will eventually move to Reith.
I would imagine the radio logos will be tweaked eventually too.
