If they were going to go more casual, dropping the jacket is more likely to be accepted than dropping the tie.

That bloke who does Breakfast Look North from Newcastle doesn't wear a jacket, and there would probably be outrage in the north east press if he suddenly did start wearing a jacket.

Well just for a little perspective on the jacket-less presenter. I dont mind it in breaking news situations. IMO it adds to the sense of urgency. And yes i understand it wasnt an intentional thing back in the 60s, unlike these days.

Cronkite famously jacketless, telling the nation (the world) that President Kennedy is dead.

AFAIK News 24 launched with the presenters jacket-less because it was supposed to be a TV version of 5 Live, a more casual rolling news output than the main bulletins (see also the music which is more breezy and less authoritative than the main bulletins at the time)

Even if it had been highly successful, not sure how long it would have lasted since the look of the main bulletins and News 24 were only kept separate for a couple of years.

Unrelated, but for a telerecording/kinescope that screengrab above looks suprisingly high quality, as if it's been rescanned recently at a high resolution?

BBC 2's ill-fated opening night was also jacketless

It also launched seven months after Channel 5, with its news studio in bright colours, and jacketless presenters perched on desks. I'm sure that had some influence on News 24.

How long in development was News 24 then?

Was definitely a female.

Turns out it was the woman from Mrs Brown’s Boys, Fiona O’Carroll who plays Maria. Was revealed on News at One.

The bizarre scene of a BBC employee (?) not entering his own workplace, to pursue her

Think that was mainly done for effect. At least she didn't duck for cover in a toilet.

Looks like we might be getting something special for News 24's 20th birthday.

OK so what do we think, are they going to run different selections of the old countdown sequences on the hour similar to the resurrection of the old Two idents? Might we finally get some decent high resolution captures??

I can understand doorstopping rogue traders and the like but doing so on this occasion seemed rather OTT to me. I can't imagine they really thought they were going to get anything useful or informative out of it, other than a bit of slightly-faster-than-usual walking to add some drama.

The only people getting outraged by this discovery of a large scale lack of integrity and morals are the Beeb themselves. What, and how many actual LAWS have been broken ? Meanwhile we carry on towards oblivion with a multitude of far more serious and influential issues.........

Let's hope the News Channel have plans to ditch the Newsnight repeat this evening.

Twitter defaults to that time zone whenever no account is logged in, so presumably the producer is either not on Twitter or doesn't use it for work.
