Looks like the News channel is staying up to cover the Brexit bill vote this evening.

Always nice to see the NC stay up beyond bedtime, providing a much superior service to Newsday for UK viewers (although I appreciate these are normally far and few between at this time of night) - we've just past 00:15 and not a WN 'Week in history' breakfiller in sight!
EDIT: With a bit of luck things might wrap up in-time for the NC to finally go to bed at 1am - Hardtalk was scheduled for 00:30 but as proceedings in Parliament aren't over they're sticking with it. Quite a stint for Clive Myrie as the evening presenter starts at something like 6:30pm now, don't they?

The evening shift does start at 18:30, although in my view there is little sense to this Monday-Thursday with Sportsday and Beyond 100 days meaning that the presenter is only on air for 15 of the first 90 minutes of the shift.

They should do this more often and go back to ending the late shift at Midnight (on weekdays) and get rid of the Pointless Newsnight repeat as (costing saving or not) it hasn't worked- Last night proved that breaking news does happen past bedtime (11:15)

Would it be possible for them to run an extended sports bulletin at 1830 linking direct to the weather? They'd avoid a presenter till 2000.
The problem however might be that they wouldn't have someone available in the event of UK breaking news.

I suspect that'll probably happen in the future. It's now happening with BBC News at One with whoever's rota'd in filling the back 20 minutes after Sportsday.
Can the presenter of the 6 not just stay on an extra 15 mins on the news channel?

Since Beyond 100 Days seems here to stay, I would argue there was a case to extend the broadcast day by an hour. They could put Newsnight at 00:15 when there is more of a chance that viewers couldn't catch the earlier broadcast on BBC Two.
The additional programming needn't cost much:
- Martine/Clive start work later, end work later.
- Papers guests are already in the studio, so the 23:30 could be reinstated (or just put HardTalk back there)
- Likelihood of OBs in a midnight bulletin is low, reports can be recycled for a short bulletin
- There would be costs associated with later running of the studio
- I'd argue there would be more value in a 00:15 repeat of Newsnight because more time has passed and there's more chance that viewers who couldn't catch it on BBC Two are able to by then.

I notice that they also run a short BBC Sport (rather then Sportsday) branded bulletin at 1:30 now from the moment the News at 1 throws to the regions, who then hands back to the News at 1 presenter to carry on and make the whole hour more seamless. I do wonder why the News at Ten doesn't go straight to weather at the end on the NC, rather than play a few trailers first - it would make things much smoother.
