Found this image of the 1999 BBC News set. It looks so good then, something like that is needed again.

With everyone here discussing what presenters they'd have on bulletins on the national news front would you reshuffle/make any changes to the current News 24 presenter schedule? I would start my ditching Joanna Gosling, Carrie Gracie, Chris Lowe and Eakin, Susanna Reid, Peter Sissons, Martine Croxall and Deborah Mackenzie. Make sure that Janet Barrie and Jo Coburn never get near the N24 seats again!

Give Tim Willcox and Karin Giannone permanent news bulletin slots. Jane Hill moves to Six o'clock News. Keep Simon and Kate on 9-1, Karin Giannone and Ben Geoghegan, 1-4, Justin Webb and Mishal Husain new presenters for 4-7. Jon and Louise would become News 24 new 'anchors' taking the 7-10.30pm slot.

I think News 24 should sign up Sheila Jansen - Sky News lost a major talent when she left. Also, Tony Campion who did a brief presenting slot with Jane Hill last year - I was impressed by him. Snatch Peter Levy and Emily Maitlis. Move Maxine and Matthew to the weekend slots.

I've never been a fan of the current BBC News look at all, ever since the original cream studio. I always get the impression they use the big screens *because all the other channels do* and they never add anything to the presentation or content.

I'd have it more like the style of Five News - no gimmicks, just sitting down and reading the news. Leave the gimmicks to the rivals - who actually manage to pull them off instead of looking like a grandparent trying to be cool.

There's been so much speculation, but can anyone say exactly what is happening with the BBC News in terms of a possible new look and when?

Thought, as a new member, I'd throw in my ideas for the BBC1 news presenter line-up!
Breakfast: Bill and Sian (Fri-Sun Simon and Kate)
One O'Clock: Moira (Mon - Wed), Sophie (Thu-Fri)
Six O'Clock: Dermot and Jane (Mon-Fri)
Ten O'Clock: Huw (Mon-Wed), George (Thu, Fri, Sun)

Saturdays - Sophie all day
Sundays - Moira (Sunday AM and Politics Show), then George doing the early-evening and the Ten

Get rid of Jordon, and send Kaplanksky back to Sky to flirt with Eamonn in the mornings). I think Fiona is pretty good, might work on Newsnight?

As for the set, BBC News on One should get rid of virtual altogether. Get a proper, real-time newsroom background, and a much bigger studio that can be incorporated into the titles.

Just a thought! Very Happy

AFAIK the exact new look has not been decided yet ... there are lots of discussions going on. I don't know a date when it will be but I would predict April/May time but that is purely a guess. A lot of it will be tied in with studio work which has been mentioned before.

Does anybody know if George is intending to go back to reporting in April, as it has been suggested before. Would give allowances for a complete presenter reshuffle

I agree that George is great reporting but his talent is somewhat wasted in the studio simply reading off the autocue. I think he would be great as a special correspondent for the main bulletins, I think that was mentioned earlier in this forum. My ideas though for the main bulletins on BBC One are:

Breakfast:
Main: Bill Turnbull and Sian Williams
Relief: Peter Dobbie and Mishal Hussein

One O'Clock
Main: Darren Jordan
Relief: Sophie Raworth

Six O'Clock
Main: Dermot Murnaghan and Jane Hill
Relief: Bill Turnbull and Sian Williams

Ten O'Clock
Main: Huw Edwards
Relief: Fiona Bruce

Weekends
Chris Eakin
Moira Stuart

This is similar to some other ideas but I think it would be good. Hopefully if the new national set has the area for Breakfast, it will have the warmer tone throughout that Breakfast has.

The current studio set up for BBC 1 National is woeful as everyone says. And also as everyone says, the cream 1999 scheme was simply superb. Sad

From my outsiders perspective the 1999 scheme was the classic (if not strictly true Very Happy ) representation if Britain - classic elegance with a contemporary twist. And that deep red carpet was so wonderfully regal, promoting everything that is good about the BBC - suggesting authority, strength and integrity (and blood-letting rows in Dyke's office of the day Very Happy).
An instantly recognisable scheme, beautifully designed and certainly the best newsroom set I have ever come across by any broadcaster, from any time, anywhere in the world. It's no wonder the 2001 scheme proved such a disappointment.

The suggestions of virtual reality for the new look would lead one to believe that designers are trying to overcome the problem of the low ceiling and general shoebox nature of the current studio. Is the current studio the one that was used for 1999 - surely not?

Yes the habit of using cheapo plastic has got to be ditched, especially from national bulletins. A darker more sultry look oughtto be conjured up, but conversely brighter titles are needed. Agreed that the current globe n ribbons have never been up to much, and the colours depressing. A slightly grander title bed is needed, and *warily slips it in* the possibility of reintroducing the lights up, lights down concept, even if just for 10.
Whatever happens, just ditch that current set for crying out loud!

You object to this:

Where as you preferred this?

I assume you meant the 2003 scheme was a disappointment, but do correct me if i am wrong.

Personally i preferred the studio after the 2001 refresh, with the exception of the new desk. The following images illustrate just how much tidier, sultry and dramatic it looked (which you mentioned the impending new look should have):

1999:

Thanks for correcting me alarsne53 (well, not really Smile), but yes I did mean 2003, not 2001!

And fully agreed, the revamp was the better version of the two. The only poor element of that whole scheme first time round (aside from the dodgy newsroom projection, but that's a technical issue, not design related) was the in-studio monitor wall unit - very poorly executed which was surprising given the level of detail lavished elsewhere. Very boxy looking, and the monitor looked ugly with no frame too. The ident created to cater for the monitor shattered the graceful curve of the wall, making it look like a unit on a clothes shop with the racks temporarily removed:

And also fully agreed about the new desk - it was such a let down, being nothing but a standard issue BBC model seen anywhere and everywhere across the station.
There was no need for a replacement, especially given how fine the original was.
