Well I think already we've seen a move away from the stand-up, walk about bulletins to more behind the desk - perhaps that's why this bulletin just doesn't work - it's actually quite dated!

Good point there. I missed the Scottish offering - who was the lamb to the slaughter up here?

So as far as I can tell from your comments so far only the East Midlands bulletin featured a new presenter.

I wish Points West had invested in a new one. Instead they went straight for the cartoon-loving-youth and rolled out Shrek.

Will Glennon aside, I liked the bulletin style and look. But perhaps they should drop the ties for the men; too formal for a funky bulletin.

Yes, that's an excellent point. As we said earlier, C5 (ITN) did this 10 years ago, so it is a dated format. I honestly have never understood standing up to read the news. To the viewer, it looks very uncomfortable, and surely most presenters would rather sit down? Thinking about news bulletins over the past couple of decades, C5 really pioneered much of the gimmickery we see today. As well as standing up, didn't Kirsty Young used to perch on the desk? The BBC still do that from time to time now! Pre-1997 and the launch of C5, the BBC and ITN bulletins were firmly presented by newsreaders sitting behind desks. Not sure what Sky was up to pre-1997, though. Can anyone shed any light on that?

I think the first time Sky News ever stood up for anything was when they launched The 9 O'Clock News or something similar. It was presented stood up in front of a CSO screen. Hmmmmm...

Think that was around 1999/2000.

Someboby PLEASE tell me that's going to get better and it only looks like that beacuse
a) All the bulbs blew in the N6
b) You just bought a job lot of Charisma's
c) You want to demonstrate how the latest round of cuts have affected the graphics operation

Why have such a forward thinking idea presented in such a backward fashion?

At the very least, keep the sting, animate full frame and pres the rest as an OOV.

Truly awful.

To me that was just something funny about Rob Smith (South East) suddenly appearing up on the other side - and closer to the screen. Could there not have been a transition similar to the way headlines are done?

Not on digital, as the opt happens when network if fully off the studio vision mixer. A fade through black might have been possible

You can't even fade network to black on a regional (not national) opt on digital - the digital opt only happens once the network feed has been taken entirely off the regional vision mixing desk (no red tally light on for network) - a technique designed to ensure analogue network (which is still the timing master and routed through the studio vision mixer - even in 16:9 digital regions) doesn't leak into the digital transmitters (though it usually fails slightly because most regions don't quite have their delays set correctly) Some regions have a second network feed onto their desk that isn't linked to the opt control - so that they can opt out on both networks with network still on the desk - to allow captions to be crawled over network etc. (Though any 16:9 material is converted to 14:9 pillarbox on digital and is covered with PAL code/decode artefacts as a result)

This will all be irrelevant eventually - as digital opts will eventually all take place in London - with regions feeding their studios and not having opt-out control of their own. (After analogue switch off certainly if not before)

The only two real transitions you can have that are the same on both analogue and digital are a cut, or a cut to black and fade up.

Also - you can't do slow transitions from network to regions - as BBC London will appear swiftly on the network feed. If you wanted to do a 1/2" wipe from Network to each region (even ignoring the digital opt issue) you'd have to delay the network transition to BBC London by 1/2" at least (probably nearer a second) which would make the London (and most watched) region look slack and a lot less slick.

Looks like Midlands opted for the "Standing in front of a Screen" route rather than a CSO:

Picture pinched from Midlands Today thread...!

At least there's no green fringing around the presenter, but the screen looks a bit soft and wishy-washy...

A quick comparison...
Trial which used a real studio: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=oV4owOzs7hk&NR=1
Last night via green screen: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=x2V87iWxd4E

I'm guessing that Look East did their regional bit against the big screen which is used for weather and travel news.

It did look far better in N6/TC8 whereever it was.

I actually didn't think it was that bad. It certainly didn't make me cringe as much as the trial versions - Natasha Kaplinsky giving an occasional glib opinion on a story really grated at the time. Thankfully that aspect appears to have been dropped.

Yes, so it is quite light, but you're hardly going to get the depth of Newsnight in a 90 second summary. I'm not quite sure what some people were expecting.

The usual N6 background might have looked nice, but the matching national and regional CSO backgrounds gave the bulletin a much more cohesive feel than would otherwise have been possible.

As for the green CSO halo, the way some are bleating on, you'd think it was deliberate. It was only the first one. It'll be sorted I'm sure.
