Editor of the Ten Craig Oliver has written this blog entry defending the 8pm summary against accusations of dumbing down. It's certainly been controversial, attracting 110 comments!

Liked the BBC One sting into it.

Not quite as dumbed down as the Kaplinsky pilots, but don't like the way it's shot at all - looks very cheap!

Well that was disappointing. It certainly sounded patronising and simple and I wasn't overly fond of the way it was filmed in front of a CGI screen.

Good sting. The CSO was a little off, and i don't know but there's something quite bare about the whole thing. I don't know why they couldn't have made a small studio for it.

At least local BBC used a studio, and laid it out differently to how they normally would.

It was a much less dumbed down version, but the on screen look was terrible, basically Kate Silverton in front of a completely black background excluding a small rectangle screen where the picture accompanying the story was shown.

Well in the North West it was the same set-up (as the national), but with the host on the right instead.

Not in the East Midlands, we just got the black and the screen, but flipped the other way round, with the presenter on the right and the screen on the left. Also did the other regions use a regular presenter. I've never seen the woman we had before - she must have been hired specially.

In the East Charlene White presented the Norwich edition, with Janine Machin presenting in Cambridge.
The quality of the Cambridge opt looks noticeably lower than that from both the national and the edition presented to the East of the region. Not sure how Cambridge are doing it, I presume through CSO. Both editions ended with a weather forecast map which was zoomed in on the sub-regon. More detail than is provided in the late bulletins.

The point about using a small studio, I think the CSO is more effective in that it keeps the bulletin the same throughout from the national to the regional section.

Depends which region you watched I bet, London used a CSO screen. Looks a bit cheap and would do even if the keying wasn't off.

The Norwich and Cambridge bulletins were presented in the same way as East Midlands.

Cambridge used the late presenter - I don't think there is anyway around this as they use the cost argument for the programme not being fully split. Fortunately I think Janine fits the image that has been rumoured they are after, and I think Amanda Goodman will also fit the image.

Charlene is a newer member of the reporting team I think in Norwich, I think she has presented some bulletins. It maybe that she is presenting tonights late bulletin - as someone doesn't always stay on from the evening programme.

It would look much better if done from the newsroom instead.

And why does the presenter have to be in shot throughout - a clear indication the BBC feel the host is more important than the news.

Kaplinsky's gone - we don't need Silverton being moulded into Kaplinsky MK II!

It was like a time warp! Has CSO progressed so slowly that Kate has to have a green halo around her head? A nice dodgy zoom out after the title screen too.

The pilot was much better with a newswall - do they think viewers will take a bit more notice if there's no "distracting" background?

To me that was just something funny about Rob Smith (South East) suddenly appearing up on the other side - and closer to the screen. Could there not have been a transition similar to the way headlines are done?

Glad there was no "and that's all from me" waste of time.
