As part of its new season of autumn programmes, unveiled by BBC1 controller Peter Fincham this morning, the channel will also launch a new nightly news summary at 8pm in order to "bridge the gap" between its 6pm and 10pm bulletins.

The new bulletin, which is expected to be up to 90-seconds long, will launch following a successful month-long trial in the Birmingham area in May.

Mr Fincham said: "We're keeping up the pace of change on BBC1. This autumn sees the introduction of a new nightly news summary at 8pm each weekday evening.

"Designed to bridge the gap between the Six and Ten O'Clock news, it joins Panorama, now firmly established in the 8.30pm Monday slot, and The One Show, each weeknight at 7pm."

Totally pointless, being 90 seconds. Why not five or ten minutes, at least?

This is the PA copy - which states no decision has been made on length or presenter.

BBC1 today announced a new nightly news summary which will be broadcast between the Six and Ten 0'Clock News.
The bulletin will go out at 8pm every weekday evening.
It is the first new bulletin on BBC1 since 1984, when the Six O'Clock News was introduced.
Natasha Kaplinsky, the newsreader and former Strictly Come Dancing star, has been taking part in pilots of the bulletin, which are expected to last just two or three minutes.
No presenters have yet been announced for the new slot.
The short bulletin, unveiled today at the BBC1 autumn season launch, could lead to accusations of dumbing down.
But the BBC says it is designed to provide a catch-up service between the Six and Ten 0'Clock News.
BBC1 controller Peter Fincham said: "We're keeping up the pace of change on BBC1.

"Designed to bridge the gap between the Six and Ten 0'Clock News, it joins Panorama, now firmly established in the 8.30pm Monday slot, and The One Show, each weeknight at 7pm."
The BBC has been criticised for scheduling Panorama against current affairs programme Dispatches on Channel 4.
Digital channel BBC3 previously came under fire when it revealed its bulletin was a 60-second format.
Independent TV channel five also runs short news summaries during the evening.

IMO it's totally dumbing down an already weakened news service on BBC1. This sort of bulletin belongs on BB3, at least. If not BBC2, which could do with a mini-news update.

So there will be a regional update at 7.25 and possibly 8pm too?

Maybe because there isn't room for a 5 or 10 minute program? The whole point is for it to be a quick update of the headlines between programs, not great details and full reports.

Is there an actual update at 7.25? I'm sure I didn't see one when I watched on Monday.

No 1925 bulletin - that only accompanied last year's The One Show pilot - when the regions handed to The One Show and then picked up again after it. This year The One Show is a selfcontained programme running 1900-1930 with no summary.
(The 90 second 1855 National News summary that the English regions took has gone since The One Show launched as well)

The 90 second update has actually been replaced by a reminder of todays national and regional news at the end of the regional news programme.

I think it's a good idea, can't see the point of it being any longer than 90 seconds, and certainly wouldn't want the regions getting any more coverage than the over-exposure that they get presently. We've already had the Ten slashed in length to provide us with nearly 10 minutes of cats stuck in trees.

How can it be dumbing down ... it's actually adding a News Bulletin - how can adding News be dumbing down???

In what sense could they deem the Midlands trial "successful"?

Perhaps people who were surveyed said they liked it and thought it should be continued.
