TBH, I prefer CNN's ticker, the 'flipper'.

As nice as the flipper idea is, it's not very practical in a news environment. Aljazeera seem to be constantly struggling to keep what they need to say inside the necessary parameters. I prefer the ticker. Have never found it distracting and quite frankly can't understand the people that do. Especially the BBC News 24 one...its so slow.

why do you say the 'flipper' is not practical in a news environment?

I think what he means is that with a flipper you can only have so many characters on the line. With a scrolling ticker, the sentences can go on for as long as they require. So, the likes of CNN and Aljazeera have to ensure every sentence they write for their flipper fits on screen. News 24 and Sky can write whatever they want and it will still look alright because it is scrolling.

Incidentally, of the two I think the flipper is the least distracting.

I wish Tickers & Flippers where a red button option (i know not as easy as it sounds) so we could get rid of them if we dont want them. I find them a little annoying but i can see why some people would find them useful.

ah - I understand now - thanks!! I know sometimes when N24 write a
L O N G sentence you get distracted from the narrative and the screen.

The flipper is therefore better if you can convey a story in bullet points, but I think it's an American-way of doing things.

Another point about the ticker, does anyone else get mildly bugged by the length of time it takes for one section of the ticker (say Headlines) to go to the next (like Sport)?

There always seems to be a 3-4 second gap between them.

The other thing that has changed has been the shimmer added to the breaking news strap, as can be seen now as they report the sad news of the death of one of the world's greatest explorers, Sir Edmund Hillary.

Very sad news, especially here in New Zealand, news updates here ever 30minutes and special editions of news programmes that are currently off air for holidays. That really has nothing to do with News 24 though.

So are we getting a completely new look to News 24 in the spring? If you read what's over on the BBC News thread you'd assume that.

@ ANT; Yes it does. The N24 ticker does have a very lathargic feel about it.

Did anyone see the 'Whenever You need To Know' advert with all the correspondents on BBC One just now. I think it was different to the original version, for example they'd got rid of the bit about being the only one to have a correspondent in Gaza, had put in new footage for correspondents that had changed location and it ended with Huw rather than Ben Brown. I'm sure I haven't seen that version of the advert before, was that the first time it was shown?

If Huw Edward was in the National News studio, it was shown very briefly when the adverts first appeared a few months ago and then disappeared, but I haven't seen it recently.
