I hope this does actually belong in this thread, but who were the original launch presenters for News 24 in 97. I seem to recall that Gavin Esler, Ben Geoghagen, Chris Eakin and Matt Amroliwala were involved, but who else presented and at what sort of times of the day?

I can't help with times, but I know that Sian Williams, David Robertson, Sarah Montague, Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Jackie Hardgrave and Kate Garraway were all involved. I think Jane Hill, Bill Turnbull and Adrian Finighan used to do overnights.

I believe that Chris Eakin, David Robertson and Sarah Montague presented Breakfast 24 over 7 days; in the week Ben Geoghan was in the morning with a female anchor, KrishnanGuru-Murthy and female anchor did the afternoon shift, Newsday24 was presented by Sian and Gavin; evenings were single-headed with either Matthew Amroliwala or Kate Garraway.

Weekends had a mixture of stuff, don't remember too much about the schedule. Saturday afternoons were Sybil Ruscoe and Roger Black, Sunday afternoons were Peter Allen, I think.

Thanks itsrobert and Norma. I never realised Kate Garraway was part of News 24, she must have had quite a different style to her one on GMTV now. Was Chris Lowe on News 24 from the start, I'm sure he's been doing weekends for a while now.

When did Philip Hayton start presenting on News 24? After he left the BBC National News in 1993/1994 he moved to BBC World, via North West Tonight. He didn't leave BBC World until 2001 so for a while he presented on both. I seem to remember he did Saturday afternoons on N24 - does anyone remember roughly when he started doing this?

Stitch08, I think there's a video clip of Kate Garraway presenting N24 on TV Ark. It might be worth taking a look if you're interested.

Philip Hayton started the weekday morning slot on News 24 in November 2001. Don't ask how I know that, but I promise it's the only sad newsreader fact I know. Wink No idea when he started the weekend shift before that, though.

You're right there. I remember he was still working on BBC World on September 11th 2001 but by Christmas he was working weekdays on N24 (and hence had given up World). I'm sure he was doing N24 Saturdays for a while before then, though, but did it stretch back into the flags era?

Yes - I think it did. I think Phil was presenting weekend shifts on the first flag set (now occupied by BBC World) and was certainly presenting the Saturday shift that included lots of sports coverage in the second flag era set (from the current News 24 space)
