I know Huw and Jon Sopel definitely presented together on 7/7, their on-screen relationship was quite awkward as far as I remember.
I don't like Huw Edwards
Sometimes
when he does special events because it seems that he never knows what he's going to say next - he does it sometimes on News 24 too. But then generally I like him and he's probably the most senior member of the newsreading teams.

Wondered if any viewers of News 24 in the early flag days could tell me something...I noticed that new videos of the flags era were on TV-ark and there are a couple of 'rejoin' clips, at quarter to...did they go to 'fake' ads, say BBC promotions, or was it merely just a sting after the headlines? Many thanks..

I didn't see News 24 during the flags era, but I can answer your question - yes, they did used to go for "breaks" of BBC promos. I know this because they continued to do it for a while during the post-flags era but it was only ever at X.45 (as well as just before the TOTH and BOTH).

There was indeed promo breaks at XX.28 (as there is now) & XX.44. They were always just before a headlines update. Originally in the early days there would sometimes be a promo break at XX.14 but this didn't last long. The TOTH sequence varied a few times during the initial year as well. They sometimes showed pictures of top stories that day over the flag motif. Also the opening of the hour could be quite long as it sometimes went like this: Top story headline read out with VT fade to studio and presenters intro, then all other headlines read out with VT, Then to sports presenter for the sports headlines, and finally to weather presenter (usually slumped on ballistrade next to news desk) for a quick mention then back to news presenters to kick it all off. The vamp would play until the news presenter started with the first story. This usually took up to 2 mins so i think it was deemed too long hence why they didn't do it for long. Another little thing during the flags era was during the weather they had lots of little stings introduced sectors such as Weather Warning, Weather Advisory, Weather Almanac etc. Difficult to explain here but i do have it on video somewhere and when i get a capture card (hopefully soon) i will upload it.

On a slightly different note.
I watched ABC's World News Tonight last night on News 24. It struck me at how inappropiate the programme's title seemed, (the top story being that a state governor had had a car crash).
There was, in total from the N24 edition, only 2 'foreign' stories mentioned. It got me worrying initally at just how ego-centric the programme seemed but it did spring one question to mind.
I know World News Tonight is edited (to remove the breaks) in London but is any of the programme content 'edited' - in order to better provide the 'American' perspective or is WNT really that self obsessed?

I'm afraid it is that self-obsessed - as is all American media (and all America really, if I can make a wider cultural point).
The only editing of ABC's World News (they dropped the Tonight about a year ago) is for ad breaks. The only exception is if there is a legal or taste issue and the BBC wants to avoid getting into trouble.

They really should rename it "ABC National News". When I was there, it was mostly about stories from Iraq, Domestic stuff, and a few fluff stories. The only true world news bulliten in the US is the News Hour with Jim Leher, which has the first 20 minutes produced by ITN, which are mostly repackaged c4 and ITV news stories. The next 40 minutes is just political stuff.

The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer is not produced at all by ITN, but by WETA, a PBS affiliate in Washington DC, but they do have an agreement to USE ITN material, probably through ITN International. The Summary tends to use an ITV News report, whilst a Channel 4 News feature sometimes appears in the main body of the programme. The NewsHour does also have its own correspondents for summary reports.
