What happened to the breaking news sting by the way? Have they used it since the first few days of the new graphics?
Now the strap appears and a short musical sting is used.
No it isn't. They don't use the sting - that's my point. What's the point of having it? If it was at all well designed the sting would happen automatically and they'd have to make a conscious decision to remove it, rather than having to fade it up as happens now.

An audio sting for breaking news is a fairly superfluous part of a presentation package if you think about it:
TV on at standard audible volume
The likelihood is that at this volume, you'll either be actively watching the programming, or have one ear on it as you do something else. You'll hear the presenter mention "breaking news" anyway, and an audio sting won't add a great deal to that.
TV on at lower, background volume
When you hear headline beds for news, business and sport, along with the usual musical stings and title music, a short audio sting in exactly the same style as the rest of the audio package isn't likely to drag your attention to the screen. If anything, an audible alert for breaking news would have to be completely unlike the rest of the audio package for it to be really successful - something like the 'red alert' klaxons from your favourite sci-fi show.
The use of a bright yellow ticker on Sky News is the perfect example of how to really grab attention with something that is 'extraordinary' as far as the rest of the presentation goes. A siren or klaxon is a logical extension of this concept.
TV on mute, such as in offices and public places
You obviously won't hear the sting, so it's the graphics that need to do the work here, and this is where News 24 falls flat on its face. All of its new graphics are too similar, both in terms of colour and layout. The flat red background is used for breaking news, but the exact same configuration is used for news in brief. Red is the standard colour for all story coverage, so when it is used as a breaking news signal, its potency is completely lost.
Bizarrely, even though Sky News looks horrible, it works far better in terms of communicating breaking news to a news channel audience. It would be a far more effective tool with a couple of minor changes - and if it wasn't visible for at least twelve hours of every day.
In short though, my point is that an audio sting or stab will add little to the presentation package, except from a geek's point of view. It certainly wouldn't have any great practical purpose.
Anyone know why News 24 are not taking the 6 tonight?
Just about to ask the same question.
Brown speach on Global Warming live just now
That was before 6pm.
EDIT: Apologies, just turned over and it was on - though he was speaking before 6 as well. Emily's just dashed off probably passing her old mucker Ben Brown!
Have to admit, don't normally watch News 24 during the evening, but happened to tune in just before 9, and they were doing a 'Your News' segment, not the programme, but just a segment lookin at the top stories on the website, video and 'yourpics'...is this done every night, or is it just a a time filler on slow news days?

They quite regularly show what is hot and what is not on the BBC News website on News 24. Guess it's just an easy way to plug bbc.co.uk/news
It has to be said I thought the BBC had got the idea that Ben Brown was awful, and that's why they moved Joanna there (or 1 reason) so why are they putting him on the Six. Someone has lost their mind if you ask me
