With all the laughter over Sky News' new look, it's perhaps not surprising that nobody's commented on the pres features for the Oscars on News 24 today...
... etc. Interesting explaination and comments. Here's a cap to illustrate what you're talking about:

I thought all the UK network live reporters did a good-humoured, decorous job. The Kermode/Mayo piece was warm if not particularly incisive - but a damn sight better than last year's misery.

Mmmm, nice set up. I enjoyed it, it was a nice way to use the set.

Thanks for the cap - much more useful than my rambling description of camera positions and pods. I'd have to disagree with the assessment that all of the UK network live reporters did a good job. I tried to watch some of Sky's coverage but my retinas were almost burnt to a crisp by the breaking news ticker, so I flicked over to the terrestrial channels. What I did see of Sky's coverage was good, though it was smothered by their graphics and so I didn't really get to enjoy it.

It's awards ceremonies and similar celebrity-filled events that always remind me of the reason that I dislike GMTV. There's such an earnest desperation about any of their coverage where a reporter is in a celebrity environment. Their reporters always seem to be trying too hard to hype up the event that they're at, with an Americanesque super-glossy, "everything's fahhhhbulous dahhhling" enthusiasm that borders on the obsessive, and positively straddles the irritating. Their "showbiz" correspondents p!ss me off at the best of times, but everyone on GMTV seems to become infected with the bug when it comes to 'glam' events such as these.

However, the BBC is far from perfect in this respect. Their Entertainment 24 strand is a weak and floppy excuse for what is almost billed as a programme in its own right, and their "entertainment" presenters seem to suffer from the same irritating ailment that GMTV's showbiz airheads are stricken with, though to a slightly lesser degree. That said, I find the BBC's coverage of these events to be slightly less sickening, as their reporters at these events seem to stay a little more grounded and in touch with reality than those at GMTV.

Realistically though, none of this awards stuff is really 'news' at all, and it should really get the titting hell off all of the real news outlets and be forcibly confined to the likes of E!News where it belongs.

I do like that effect - very cheesy but clearly tongue-in-cheek.

Just seen them use the local time bug for a report from Sudan. Never seen it used before on OBs, appart from when they've been reporting on the Oscars.

Indeed - however Mayo and Kermode are superb and far funnier every week on Five Live than they're allowed to be on World/News 24 co-productions - just in case anyone's not heard the film review slot before.

I heard that a complete new graphics set up would roll out over time for BBC News 24 and World (eg maps, windows and menus).... When do we expect this to happen.... The current seems to waste the new graphics system, plus also means we are still left with things not matching!!
