If you have been watching closely - all we are doing is controlling the N8 VIZ from the N6 gallery. N6 output replaces N8 output on the transmission network and then the VIZ is added further down the chain. Because N6 has no automation - its all being controlled by a text producer sitting at the back of the gallery, but essentially its the same 'box' that is used on N24 - its just being controlled from a different gallery in manual conditions.

VIZ is a two stage project. Phase 1 was to get it to replace TOG in BBC NEWS 24 and BBC World.
Phase 2 will be to get it to replace Astons provided by Big Ted in N6, but we need to get a second 'box', so this will be installed later this year.

Hope that makes sense.

It does, thanks for the explanation.

Why can't they do what they've done today during the 1/6/10 then? i.e. control the N8 VIZ from the N6 gallery. That way the 1/6/10 graphics would look the same as the News 24 ones.

Probably for two reasons.

Consistency across all bulletins on BBC One. It wouldn't work during short bulletins e.g. this evenings and secondly I assume it would be problematic if News 24 opted out for breaking news during a national bulletin.

It would also be foolish for N6 to 'share' N24's VIZ engine as they would be unable to do pre-records, recordings and rehersals while N24 was on air - and yes if N24 wanting to break away - as they have done twice this week - it would be impossible.

Its the awful backdrop that they used on the last occasion. I don't know why they can't just use the nationals background for News 24, and the actual Breakfast background for breakfast - they use the graphics. Just makes more sense. The only problem I could see is that at some point in the day they need to switch between day, dusk and night backgrounds.

i too find it odd they don't just use the actual Breakfast backdrop when in N6 at the weekend. The only reason i can think of is perhaps breakfast viewers at the weekend don't always watch breakfast during the week.

The short bulletins have different graphics anyhow.

I've never bought the excuses for the poor graphics on network - and as several people have pointed out, if it can be done today, it can be done anyday with a little bit more effort.

Headlines at 10.02 after Our World finished and then straight into Story Fix after about 20 seconds. Hardly seemed any point.

They seem to be coping ok with the one studio. Only had the headlines at 22:00. The main evening programme with Matthew Amroliwala will be transmitted on both BBC ONE and NEWS 24 at 22:10.

Been watching it overnight, while I was watching (between 2am-now), on the first 30 mins of each hour (ie., the main news bulletin) a BBC News DOG was displaying, rather than BBC News 24 or BBC World. This hour, a BBC News 24 DOG is appearing with no ticker.

EDIT: And at 05:12... BBC News DOG re-appeared, no clock and no ticker.

This is what we've been seeing through the night on BBC World... well most of the night, its been all a mess really.

Between 03.00 - 03.30 with Big Al, it was a generic BBC News DOG with ticker and no clock. After the BOTH it was back to BBC News 24 DOG with clock and ticker.

I just don't see why the Big Ted graphics in N6 can't be designed to look more like News 24's. ie. straps which go the full width across the screen at least, and a matching location bug.
