Huw would not be able to do it because he has to go to the meeting afterwards and then has to catch the tube home.

A national news presenter getting the tube home? Unless that's by personal choice, I highly doubt it!

think i remember Alastair Stewart mentioning he took the tube to work, but this is the BBC we're talking about here. Huw probably has a taxi waiting to whisk him home.

I expect that even ITV have cars to take their presenters home! Laughing

I would have thought with those salaries, they could afford a taxi!

When I was in London recently, I was staying out at Shepherd's Bush for a while, and I saw Simon McCoy on the Underground - heading home, I guess, after one of his shifts on air. So clearly some news presenters must take the tube. Who knew they were ordinary people just like the rest of us? Wink

From an Observer interview with BBC Economics Editor Evan Davies in 2005:

"When (Davies) is finally done, Kirsty, the BBC PR woman suggests we cab it over to TV Centre, but Evan interrupts with one of his suggestions, 'Or what about the tube? It's really much quicker. Would you mind?' "

Isn't this a little odd..

RE: LETTER BOMBS

In the past 20mins no less than 3 different reporters have been interviewed from the Cardiff newsroom. first up was Wyre Davies, then Hywel Davies, then another Hywel....

I would guess Wyre has left to get to Swansea, the second is often seen on Newyddion and the other Hywel..not sure.

That's the BBC for you!

PS Has any news organisation had anyone reporting live from Swansea yet?

Coincidentally, a MediaGuardian article about BBC News clamping down on expenses has just answered our query!

"Among the changes are a ban on taxis to and from news presenters' homes before 6.30am and after 10.45pm."

OOoooooo!

BBC News 24 have the first pictures from the scene at 11:53!

It is a total of 2 seconds worth of mobile phone footage which has been on a continual loop for the last few minutes.
It's almost hypnotic as its so short and could be deemed unsuitable for broadcast.

At last the BBC got someone to the location!

Wyre Davies got there at 12:10

Unfortunately it was only via video phone and we didnt get to see or hear anything as it didnt work - the whole thing was abandoned!

Meanwhile a whole hour earlier ITV News had a presence at the location!

If only the ITV News Channel was still around it would be leading this story as it did on many occasions with UK-based stories!

ITts nearly three hours since the original incident and no-one has still managed to broadcast live from the location yet! Is Wales really that remote and cut-off to the rest of the UK?

EDIT 12:26

Sky News now reporting live from Swansea.

Well we could see a reporter talking on his phone along with some live pictures. I wonder why the BBC are taking so long?

There is much more to broadcasting from the scene than just 'getting someone there'.

Obviously there needs to be a reporter on the scene. But there also needs to be a camera operator with camera & sound kit, a satellite van with engineer - it isn't as simple as you may imagine.
