The big sofa would get in the way when they were presenting at the screens.

Point taken.
I've just knocked this up in sketch up I haven't added textures and colours yet so you'll have to use your minds.

first one - a kind of overview of the studio. There's the desk, a small walkway leading to a little soft area.

Ok next the desk. not necessarily an angle that would be used on air, but it serves a purpose.

and finally the little interview area, complete with stool!!!
Linda Barker would be proud.

As you can see interior design is not my strong point and these are far from looking anwhere near presentable but I was somewhat intrigued by the idea of a sofa - which in the heat of the moment looked and sounded quite a good idea but i feel that it would just be too laid back for news24.

EDIT: Done some more work, it all looks very dark, but you obviously wouldn't have that picture on the newswall. more soon.

That's along the lines of what I was thinking SN2005, although one rather large drawback is any interviews that took place at that desk would be in profile due to the space constrictions. I guess you could angle the presenter towards the backwall and put their camera on the right hand side of the walkway, beside the main desk. You would then have a nice over-the-shoulder shot of the guest.

The main desk would also need to bigger and perhaps more of an oval shaped as mentioned previously to comfortably fit several guests. With the amount of extra cameras they will need for N24 to operate effectively N6 could become quite a cluttered space. Also, what kind of establishing/safety shot could they use - a remote camera suspended from above or just a fixed shot? Either could make the studio look tiny and messy.

How do they do those opener things on Breakfast? One of them could look pretty cool.

I like the ideas in the above sketches and think that it is the right sort of thing to do. Also, as has been mentioned, I can see the studio getting pretty cluttered unless the number of cameras is reduced - currently there's eight including the aerial shot, probably reduced to five or six. In regard to the 'fixed shot' I could imagine an aerial shot similar to the nationals in the 2003-2006 era, with a wide overview of the studio.

Jeeze, i really have never seen anyone worse, or more uncomfortable presenting News 24 than Gavin Hewitt. The 6.30 sequence just gone was terribly embarassing, he didnt know what was going on and rather threw poor James Dagwell as well when he said 'whats on tonight James' straight after introducing Entertainment 24, totally forgetting the opening titles. And he said i hope i heard correctly 'theres more on our interactive service BBC One'! Hmmm deary me, good correspondents do not always make good presenters and this is a case in point.

What an embarrasing line-up it was last night. Don't know who that woman was presenting with him, but that was just cringe-worthy. Thank goodness for the Champions League...

Al ot of chat in the World thread abotu the loss of varois features programs including all of the 'EXTRA' programs and 'Dateline London'. This could basically leave Gavin Esler without much of a role at BBC News which is a shame because when N24 launched he used to have one of the prime-time slots with Sian Williams (if memory serves).

I think that may be he could be given a weekend magazine and features slot going out between 2-5 on a Saturday and Sunday afternoons, head to head with sky's awful news in 15 minutes crap. Covering the day's news and sports action with a few feature stories thrown in for good measure.
