The BBC One gallery has had the ability to do the same animating Viz lower thirds as News 24 for quite some time. It was installed, but not used, the last time News 24 were there AIUI.

So why don't they use them on BBC One bulletins then?

Because the VIZ Engine that would be needed to make them work has not been installed. N6 can control N8's VIZ engine and hence generate lower thirds, and as soon as the 2nd VIZ engine has been installed will be able to use them as well and replace Big Ted Astons.

Apologies - my understanding was that the engine was installed but not commissioned (something to do with software licensing?)

The Viz machine is installed and has been used several times when World have been in N6. It is licenced as a backup so can only be used when the main viz in either N9 or N8 is out of service.

So if it's just a question of licencing, why don't they just buy the licence and get the thing working! What's the point of having the equipment sitting there unused?

Just a comment about Huw Edwards' Five O'Clock News presentation, he's certainly enjoying presenting this now. It's become quite an accomplished slot now (imo).

Chris Eakin's been given the "Question Time Extra" gig for News 24

Also interesting to note that QT is getting a new set design and titles to coincide
with being made by an independent production company for the first time.

It's a shame this is going to be on so late. It's bad enough staying up till 11:35pm to see the end of QT. If only the schedule could be brought forward.

More pressing, why didn't they use an open source solution? Or write one themselves?

Open Source Solution - Have you ever seen an open source broadcast graphics engine? Besides, I doubt many OS developers could afford the £4500 graphics cards used.

Write it themselves - they've done it before, but everything these days has to be value for money. The R&D costs of developing an equivalent of Vizrt would be much much greater than buying a license to use the software.

They have brought 4 massive trucks with them. They have been there at least 24 hours and are currently parked in the disabled parking spots.
