Oh what a contrast the Six News Hour has become to the Ten News Hour. The latter is excruciatingly painful with Chris Eakin explaining ad nauseum whats coming up and being soooo nerdy about everything, while the former is just a joy to watch.

Joanna, as lots of people are noticing, is growing into the roll amazingly, and it's just great to see the laid back and natural way things flow between entertainment and business, then a bit of news, then sportsday. On the Ten NH it's all so stilted.

Although, arguably the actual Ten is better than the Six IMO....

However the 6 news hour has Entertainment 24, which has no right to be on the BBC News channel.

Question, why doesn't BBC News 24 use there breaking news sting music when there is breaking news?
I think it adds to the story and the feel.. but i haven't heard it in ages.

I agree, they should use it. God knows why they dont anymore.

Chris Eakin on late tonight bringing coverage of the by-election results. He comes in for some stick on here for his style but I really do enjoy watching him.

Poor fella. Been on air since after the ten till 3. You'd think they would have a back up presenter for when News 24 needs to stay on its own overnight.

To expand on my point from last night, I'm wonder what would happen if a news channel presenter (N24 or World) was unable to go on air at the last minute due to for example (hevean forbid) being involved in an accident on the way to TC. Would it not be a good idea to have one of the news team in the background trained and ready to go on air in case of a last minute change. I really think leaving Chris Eakin anchoring until 3 in the morning is a bit too much and fair play he handles it pretty well. They should have someone else on standby, just one person mind to cover News 24 or World should there be a problem with the current presenter.

I read somewhere that Nicky did that once when he was supposed to be working behind the scenes on the overnight shift or something.

IIRC, the presenter who was down to do it fell asleep.

He worked a 4½ hour shift for God's sake! Rolling Eyes

I did detect that he was getting more than a little frustrated at the delays in announcing the result from Ealing Southall.

I don't see the problem - Chris knew in advance that is what he was going to be doing. The old overnight shift used to be a six hour on air shift 0000-0600 which one person did on their own. It's not that much of a problem - just happened the by-election result was slightly later than expected.
And yes I did appear when a certain presenter fell asleep somewhere else in the building. I had less than a minute from us realising he wasn't there to me being on air - strange experience.

I'm not criticising him, I just wonder if there should have been some more material available so that he could have run a 'normal programme' after the Sedgefield result until Ealing Southall was known. There seemed to be an awful lot of 'repetitive navel gazing' going on which could have been avoided. The count in ES seemed to be shambolic which can't have helped either the BBC or Sky.
