Why did News 24 insist on sticking their own graphics over NWT - not neccessary at all?

I'm getting rather fed up of this on-screen junk on all the news channels generally cutting 1/3 of the picture with often quite useless information.

It was one of the positive things about the "back to basics" BBC Strike 24 News bulletins - no pointless graphics giving us pretty useless information.

Why should a tv news channel only show pictures? If you agree to watch a news channel, you agree to watch tickers, bugs, straps, etc etc.

Only in recent years, though. I always chose BBC News 24 and BBC World because they didn't have any tickers or big bugs. They had a simple bug in the top left corner, with astons only.

Now, we have permanent tickers, huge astons which animate every five seconds, explosions denoting breaking news. It's gone crazy. Why can't we have choice anymore? I always chose not to watch Sky News because of their horrendous graphics, but now I'm subjected to them on practically every channel.

I think a back to basics approach is needed -- why not just have pictures with smaller astons? Does anyone actually read the ticker anyway? I never do. I can get all the news I want from the newsreader and astons. After all, a news channel's main aim is to bring us the news in pictures -- why obscure them with lots of annoying junk?

Because the BBC like to copy everyone else. There was a time long ago when they were inovators in broadcasting, but now the BBC is a big fat sheep that follows everyone else's lead.

The state of the BBC is down to the fact that no one is allowed to be inovative. It's still far too stiff-upper-lip and hoity-toity.

All thanks to the unique way in which BBC rapes our bank accounts.

When News 24 relaunched with their current set of graphics, they said that the double-height slugs and the like were primarily for offices who has News 24 on in the background, with the sound down, so they could easily see what was going on in the world. And in the evening, they'd make things a little bit more tame and use single-height slugs that were a bit easier on the eye.

Did they ever actually do that?

I don't think the astons are too bad, maybe just a little too big though in height.

I could have just imagined this, but when Jon handed over to Carol in the headlines area, there was a little boy of about 6 standing next to her, who then walked out of shot.

Who's this Susan Osmond, someone who lives on your street?

Or are you talking about former Points West presenter Susan Osman? Wink

I thought it was a small female, with short hair?
