the printer will be where the amended scripts come from when a new story is broken or when a story is amended, when it has already been dumped into auto-cue. I think the newscaster always likes to have paper back-up in case the cue breaks down and the script may have changed from the version that the presenters walk into the studio with at the top of the bulletin.

Autoque is linked to the ENPS system so will automatically update when the script is changed.
The Floor manager is responsible for ensuring the presenters have up to date paper scripts in-case of problems with autoque.
The presenters printer is mainly used to by the presenter to print out pieces of copy and background to help them cope with interviews and changing stories.
Overnight there is no floor manager so it is used to print out a set of scripts.

Is that basically what all the paper is there for. Surely it can't all be for the autocue.

going by the Michael Jackosn report that was just on - prpeated interviews lack any box and just have the snazzy map. If the ticker is permanent at least there seems to be a lot of info on it and not just half a dozen headlines on a loop.

Have to admit though I do like the new location graphic going down to the tower and if the ticker is a permanent feature like said above at least theres differences in the title....

Twisted Evil Right now the titles....

It amazes me that 18 months after the new graphics package was introduced, there are still so many ridiculous and irritating cock-ups on an almost hourly basis. In addition to the frequent silliness of name supers appearing too late, or the Tower and/or ticker masthead randomly animating off and on screen, this morning's latest cock-up saw a black-headed three-line super appearing far too late during a playback of an earlier interview bearing the following legend:

JAMES GRAY MP
Shadow Scottish Secretary
Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland

Nothing untoward there, except that after remaining on screen until the end of the interview, it then animated on and off a total of 9 (I think) complete cycles. After the ninth time of animating on and off, it mercifully buggered off.

You'd think that with the News 24 team actually making going out of their way to work to rule that it would have improved standards in such aspects. Tiresome.

Agreed the use of the map above the tower looks good. I remember someone mocking something similar ages ago.

I still wish they'd sort out the location strap though. If a place name is longer than Stoke it looks rubbish with tiny text. I much preferred the way it was displayed when the current look launched.

And I won't even start on the empty red box when repeating a previously live interview for fear of sounding like a broken record.

Yes, that is annoying and should be stopped! At least put 'EARLIER' or something.

I only caught about 20 minutes of News 24 this morning. Has the map-based location graphic completely replaced the old 'white text in black box' version now? If so, it also appears the empty red box issue might have been resolved. Earlier they had a re-run of an interview from Manchester with the map graphic, and no red box! Instead, the top of the map faded out towards the top of the screen.

Looks like - it was used for all the time I was watching yesterday evening.

I found it somewhat patronising when they were telling me where this faraway city of Manchester is, but at least it looks a little more fab than the box, and might be useful when they're going further afield.

They just had someone in from the City and they used the black box again. Seems even they think showing where London is could be taking it a bit far! But then again perhaps they could have a streep map of London for instances like this.

that three line super infuriates me. it's so ugly. Why can't they do a two line and animate into a one line in the style of world. The way the astons shrink and grow on N24 is fab but we never see it

This particular 3 line aston IIRC has a weird way of animating off screen, the top text dosen't seem to disappear as it should, I wonder if they fixed that little thing.

They also didn't use the new map with a report from Little Bookham yesterday - I would have thought not many people know where that is. When it is used, though, it's a great innovation, and helps to make News 24 stand out from the crowd a little bit more.

They went to the "BBC Interactive Studio" about 40 minutes ago for a woman to read out the "Have Your Say" texts/emails on the Man U story.

Have they ever done this before?

The studio looked like it had far too many flatscreen monitors in to actually be of any use to anyone.
