I'm sure this has been asked before, but what is the machine behind the desk? Is it a fax/printer?

the printer will be where the amended scripts come from when a new story is broken or when a story is amended, when it has already been dumped into auto-cue. I think the newscaster always likes to have paper back-up in case the cue breaks down and the script may have changed from the version that the presenters walk into the studio with at the top of the bulletin.

Autoque is linked to the ENPS system so will automatically update when the script is changed.
The Floor manager is responsible for ensuring the presenters have up to date paper scripts in-case of problems with autoque.
The presenters printer is mainly used to by the presenter to print out pieces of copy and background to help them cope with interviews and changing stories.
Overnight there is no floor manager so it is used to print out a set of scripts.

Funny moment on N24 just now. They were playing a sports report, and you could hear sports presenter Chris Hollins shouting over it in the background:
"If you could just blow your nose a little louder, that would be...."

Laughing He's good is Chris!

Anyone noticed that they're using an insert with the location of the reporter on the a map of the globe. The insert is between the Tower and the Live DOG and is permanently on whenever the reporter is on screen.

Also, the ticker seems to be permanently on now with various stories, sport & business.

EDIT: They've interviewing a Manc fan outside Old Trafford atm and are using the insert with a map of Britain and Manchester indicated. I like it, quite effective.

Agreed the use of the map above the tower looks good. I remember someone mocking something similar ages ago.

I still wish they'd sort out the location strap though. If a place name is longer than Stoke it looks rubbish with tiny text. I much preferred the way it was displayed when the current look launched.

And I won't even start on the empty red box when repeating a previously live interview for fear of sounding like a broken record.

Yes, that is annoying and should be stopped! At least put 'EARLIER' or something.
