Going back to n24's use of presenters on location for what they consider to be major news stories, i have compiled a list which is by no means complete. It definitely shows Jon Sopel to be the main presenter but also lists Peter Dobbie, Simon McCoy and Chris Eakin as important anchors. All additions are welcome:

War in Iraq - Jon Sopel & Peter Dobbie, Kuwait City (March-April 2003)
Madrid train bombings - Jon Sopel, Madrid (March 2004)
Expansion of the EU - Jon Sopel, Dublin (May 2004)
Factory explosion - Simon McCoy & Chris Eakin??, Glasgow (May 2004)
US Election - Jon Sopel, Washington (October-November 2004)
Asian Tsunami - Jon Sopel & Peter Dobbie, Galle (January 2005)
Charles/Camilla engagement announced - Simon McCoy & Jane Hill (Feb 2005)
Ellen MacArthur returns - Chris Eakin, Falmouth (February 2005)
Pope's illness and death - Jon Sopel, Rome (March & April 2005)

I have listed only News 24 presenters (not BBC World) and can remember Sopel presenting in Stockholm and Brussels but can't remember when. Also I cannot remember who presented from Normandy on D-Day 60th anniversary apart from Huw Edwards.

D-Day was done by Philip Hayton.

The D-Day Breakfast was done by Simon McCoy.

Dermot Murnaghan has presented Breakfast on most special occasions most recently from Rome, Bristol and also last year at Westminster and The British Museum. The only other presenter out and about was Sian Williams on the Asian Tsunami.

George Alagiah also covered the tsunami for the six and visited his grandfather's house.

Correct it was Simon and Chris.

To be perfectly honest I don't recall any presenter out in the field and all I remember was the Iraq War programme on after Breakfast which Dermot presented one Friday morning.

Good use of the ticker this morning. With so much focus on the royal wedding, obviously other stories are suffering from a lack of attention, but the ticker is doing a good job of keeping people informed. For the first time that I've seen at least, the ticker is showing full information on individual stories in sequence. For example, as I write this now, the ticker masthead reads "FBI ALERT", with salient details on the story scrolling along. And it now reads "JUNK MAIL", giving the broad information about the spammer who's been sentenced today.

With fairly detailed information on MG Rover, Iraq, the FBI alert story, and the junk mailer, it's a much better offering than the usual single-sentence "HEADLINES" overview. Equally impressive is that when they cut away from the wedding to other stories, they've been running information about the wedding on the ticker.

I do feel the ticker has often been a missed opportunity in many respects, as there's usually very little useful information on it, and it gets very repetitive as it loops so often. Greater depth of detail, and genuinely useful information (rather than simply scrolling info that's already been mentioned seconds earlier) on it is most welcome.

Argeed. The ticker is one of the best pres devices, info wise and should a on-screen permently, I mean what is the point of having popping up evrery now and again?
News 24 should have a full-time ticker.

I don't see the appeal of tickers, and can honestly say that I've never actually even read one in full. I just find the scrolling text distracting, hard to read and either too slow, or over the content over-simplified.

If anything, the ticker style thing they have on Newsround (I know, bear with me) is actually quite good in my opinion. The text scrolls on, waits, moves off. I find this much easier to read and keep track of things.

I thought I'd maybe grow to appreciate the ticker but it's just a device that I can't get used to and it irritates me. I feel current tickers, both on the BBC and Sky add very little to the channels. I'd favour an instruction to press red for the latest news round-up.

I was watching N24 last night and was really impressed with Julian Worricker's presenting. He was fluent in his speech to camera, and did not seem to struggle with speaking on TV rather than his accustomed radio. Although he is one of the BBC's top radio presenters, it wouldn't surprise me if he eventually makes the step up to frontline television presenting.

Does anyone know when he first presented on News 24?

No permanent tickers on any channel please, It's alright in the case of IMPORTANT breaking news only.

Julian's been presenting on News 24 for about a year now. He also presented The News Show on BBC Three when it launched ... and he's no stranger to TV having presented Midlands Today many years ago. A true professional broadcaster and a nice guy.

I was wondering if someone could confirm/deny the following. Some members over in the Weather thread have been suggesting new colour scheme for BBC News, I don't read much into this but is there the off chance this has some groundings?

I agree. I think the ticker should be used only during breaking news or very important stories. Otherwise it just discracts me and does not add anything to the programme.
